The Eureka Police Department is investigating a late-night crash last week that left a woman with major injuries as the driver who ran a red light fled the scene, according to Brittany Powell, EPD’s Public Information Officer.

This collision occurred on November 23, 2022, at about 11:50 p.m.  It appears the at fault driver was traveling north on Broadway and ran the red light at the Henderson Street intersection, colliding with a vehicle turning south onto Broadway from Henderson.  The woman driver who was hit suffered major injuries and was extracted from the vehicle by Humboldt Bay Fire.  As these vehicles were colliding, they collided with two additional vehicles in the intersection.  (4 vehicles in total were involved).  The at fault driver fled the scene immediately following the collision, leaving the vehicle on scene.  The investigation into the identity of this driver is ongoing.

There is a GoFundMe set up to help the woman hit during the accident. According to the GoFundMe, the woman, Sarah James, is a single mother of two and and instructor at the Sun Yis Academy of Taekwondo.

At the time the GoFundMe was set up, the page stated that Sarah was currently in an ICU suffering from a broken neck and ribs, collapsed lung, and other internal injuries.

If you have any information about the accident, please contact the EPD at (707) 441-4060, refer to case # 22-5254 or Officer Cassidy.

It says the runaway driver left their car at the scene.
Not much sense in looking for it. IMHO: Probably stolen.

But that is not a description of make or model. Obviously, burblestein was concerned about an acquaintance or family member, thus his interest in make and model.

I suggest the police look up the registration on the abandoned suv. It would be helpful to know if it was reported stolen or not.

oh and *duh*

I hope the victim has a full recovery and whomever did this is held accountable.

Gee, the cops never thought of that! However, the registration may be expired, or the address is out of date, or it’s the SUV of the driver’s grandma, who is in a rest home and doesn’t know it’s gone. All sorts of possibilities, other than stolen.

There’s a lot the cops don’t think about. Our erstwhile neighbors loved to ride noisey dirt bikes up and down our residential road. One broke down in front of our house and they just dumped it in the ditch across the street from us. Another neighbor wrote down the VIN right before the creepy neighbors defaced it. The County was given the number and weeks later the dirt bike was hauled out by the County. I don’t think they cared about registration. Taxpayers can just pay for it and registered owners skate. Easier than a court case. Last we heard, the creepy family decamped for MAGA Idaho or some pit where they could be appreciated.
Years ago a lady I knew was murdered by a boyfriend and the cops gave his blood-stained belt back to him. It’s fun to watch “Bones” and “”Monk” and “Colombo”, but reality is more like the “Sund-Polosso “ murders.

Eureka, #1 in hit-and-runs, stabbings. It’s like, every week. WTF.

Some commenters have suggested motorcycle cops for traffic, maybe somebody could get a grant for that, if that’s affordable.

I think bike cops would be excellent. EPD had a couple several years ago. They were pretty effective. I recall EPD got a grant recently for traffic enforcement. Hope they haven’t spent it all on pizza and pastries!

Depends on the weather. In an I guess… ‘old weather normal’ year it’s going to be rotten weather for 8 months of the year.

The EPD should sit in their vehicles and use radar on H & I Streets…When those streets are under control, move on to other dangerous roads…
