LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – An inmate died Sunday at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, authorities said.

Necdet Canbaz, 70, was serving a life sentence since July 9, 1999.

He was found guilty of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony in Douglas County.

Court records show Canbaz shot Debora Peralta in the back of the head in 1998, and then shot her in the neck as well.

Defense argued Canbaz was suffering from a major depressive disorder with psychosis, panic disorder, and disassociative amnesia.

His cause of death has not been determined.

A grand jury will investigate his death, as required by state law.
