BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A trooper with the Louisiana State Police was checking for speeders on I-10 East last week when a truck allegedly flew by at over 100 mph.
The truck was clocked at 106 mph near the Essen Ln. overpass.
The trooper followed the truck which was driven by Don Reeves, 39, of Sorrento.
Reeves allegedly did not slow down and proceeded to go around traffic on I-10 East.
The Sorrento man got off I-10 East at Siegen Ln. and a traffic stop was initiated by the trooper on the “I-10 East entrance ramp,” according to the affidavit.
The affidavit states that during the ensuing stop, the trooper saw Reeves exhibit these characteristics:
- A slight sway
- Red and glassy eyes
- Slurred speech
- Alcoholic odor on his breath
Reeves admitted to having “one or two beers” earlier in the evening.
The 39-year-old also said he was on the way home because no one was home with his 10-year-old son.
Reeves did not do well when asked to complete Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested by the trooper.
A deputy with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office was asked to go to the home of Don Reeves and check on the 10-year-old.
The 10-year-old was fine and Reeves was “issued a summons for Child Desertion in Ascension Parish,” according to the affidavit.
The Sorrento man did not take a chemical breath test and made it difficult to complete a blood test.
Reeves allegedly told troopers and others at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital that “you aren’t getting my blood.”
While troopers tried to calm the 39-year-old, he apparently said that he would “have their jobs and sue them,” according to the affidavit.
Blood was eventually drawn and submitted for analysis.
Reeves was arrested and charged with the crimes listed below:
- Disturbing The Peace/Drunkenness
- Public Intimidation And Retaliation
- Operating A Vehicle While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense
- Reckless Operation Of A Vehicle
- D/L Fail Chg Address
- Maximum Speed Law
- Improper Lane Usage
The 39-year-old was arrested once before for DWI in 2014.
The Ascension Parish man was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday, November 23 and released two days later.
