Man dead following shooting on 37th St in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Sunday night in Newport News.

The call for the shooting came in around 11:49 p.m. in the 900 block of 37th Street.

When officers arrived, they found 31-year-old Shawn Grayson inside a home, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a man known to the victim was detained as a person of interest in the fatal shooting. They later arrested 25-year-old Jayquan Phillips. He’s been charged with murder; shooting into an occupied building; assault; possession of a firearm by a felon; and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Police say they are not looking for additional suspects.
