RALEIGH, N.C. — A man injured in a Sunday night shooting at North Hills knew the person who shot him, police say.

Around 7:30 p.m., officers with the Raleigh Police Department responded to reports of a shooting near the Regal movie theater at 4150 Main at North Hills St., close to the Christmas tree and green space in the busy shopping center.

A man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooter and the victim knew each other, police said.

Police said the shooter was questioned, but no arrests have been made.

A press release stated the incident was isolated and there was no threat to the public, but Thanksgiving weekend is a busy time for shopping, and people were outside walking around at the time of the shooting.

It's the second time shots have been fired at North Hills in less than a month. On Nov. 12, one person was taken to the hospital after being grazed by a bullet from a shooting in a parking lot outside North Hills around 12:15 a.m., according to Raleigh police.

North Hills released the following statement:

The area was cleared around 10:30 p.m. and everything is secure. The Kane Security team is actively assisting RPD’s investigation and will remain in communication with our tenants. As always, the security of our guests, residents and tenants is our top priority. It will remain so.
On Monday, WRAL News spoke with James Demeo a local security expert and author of "What's YOUR PLAN?: A Step-by-Step Guide to Keep Your Family Safe During Emergency Situations." Demeo encouraged families to do the following:
  • Have emergency plans in place before they head to any public place
  • Create a unique code unique to your family
  • If you see something, say something
  • Look for signs of individuals that display erratic behavior

"Having that conversation is key charge your cellphones and determine a meeting place," Demeo said.

Shootings happened at other busy shopping centers as well.

On Black Friday, a person was shot at the Walmart Supercenter in Lumberton. Police believe the shooting was between two people who knew each other. In Greenville on the same day, police said two males were shot at Greenville Mall near East Carolina University.
Days earlier, a man opened fire on his coworkers in a Walmart in Virginia late Tuesday, leaving seven people dead, including the gunman, police said.

An investigation into the North Hills shooting is ongoing.
