been watching emmerdale, and there hasnt been a proper advert throught the show, just plenty of Self Promotion, GMB Clip, Georgia and Tommy and Fing Su and Davide, having there promotion clips on every ad break, plus the video, where the young girl is suffering from mental health
Is it because its showing in what normally is a news hour

ITV 1 still has a core audience in their fifties and sixties and has big event televsion this year like IAC and the World Cup that has been getting very good figures, and their smaller channels are tailor made for different audiences( ITV2- teen and young women, ITV3- over 50s, ITV4- men and sports fans, CITV- children, ITV Be- reality show fans). Obviously they'll never get 50% of the audience again as it's no longer 1982 and three channels, but ITV as a whole has 24% of the audience and is evolving.

What does this have to do with the adverts in Emmerdale?
Take Sky Max as an (extreme) example.
They show a lot of US imports, which are usually around 42 mins long. But they can only show a an average of about 12 mins of adverts per hour. So they fill the other 6 mins with promos.
It will be the same for ITV but the timings will be different. (I don't know what they are for ITV which is why I used Sky Max as an example!)
ITV has reported the highest advertising revenue in its history this year.
Some years back when ITV1 showed the US drama The Americans on Saturday nights at around 10:30pm there were no adverts just a few promos at every break. This is because ITV1 had used their advert quota for the night during Ant and Dec earlier which was much more valuable to them.
Is also why if you record stuff on the pay channels at around 2am they are usually using only a 50 minute slot rather than 1 hour as again no advert to show as they would rather use the advert quota at better times as they know then hardly anyone watching live and all the recordings will just skip the ads.
Of course they are adverts, they are advertising something, in the case of the BBC they are advertising other BBC programmes. And in the case of every other channel, programmes appearing on those channels.
It's got nothing to do with inability to sell advertising. They are only allowed an average of 8 minutes per hour during primetime, but can have a maximum of 12 minutes per hour.
They will get more revenue from selling 12 minutes per hour during IAC, and having none in the 6-7pm hour (to keep the average down to 8 minutes).

Still the best way for advertisers to reach a big audience. Only the Beeb taking ads would threaten the future of ITV.

this makes it clear that promotions (and the C5 "holiday competitions" etc) are Not Advertising
and also how long a break (and when )you can have as well as the minutage per clock hour
I think the words 'you may be right from a viewers POV' are key here, given that, the vast majority on here, are viewers!
I guess there's a difference between (paid for) advertisements, versus (self) promotions
I suppose both are paid for, in that there are costs to even the BBC self promotions, but I see where you are coming from. However, the BBC are still advertising a product, even if it is the BBC, and its programming and services.

Yes, they are paid for - by us. There is absolutely no need for these daft trails. Just put up the name of the show, when and where it's on and the general outlines. Talking pictures TV does that sort of thing and it's actually clearer to the viewer than having lots of flashy effects or folk jumping around like a flea on a griddle. We pay for commercial TV by ads, we don't need them on a channel that is paid for by licence payers.

They may well have broader interests, but still remain viewers.
And an advert, is an advert.
