A driver is dead after police spotted a vehicle traveling at high speeds Saturday night, the Springfield Police Department reported.
Around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, while stopped at a red light at 42nd and Main streets, a Springfield patrol officer observed a dark colored Range Rover pass him eastbound on Main at 80-90 mph.
The officer attempted to maintain a visual of the vehicle and initiate a stop, but due to extreme speeds, was never able to and no pursuit occurred.
The Range Rover continued eastbound out of the city at speeds over 120 mph.
As officers began searching the area of Hwy 126 and Thurston Road, dispatch received a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle accident in the 3800 block of Hwy 126.
"Officers arrived to the scene within seconds to find the same vehicle that had previously been observed," SPD said. "The driver of the vehicle was found to be deceased. Alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors."
Police have not identified the deceased.
Traffic was delayed for hours and flagged through the crash area three miles west of Walterville at milepost 10, Oregon Dept. of Transportation said Saturday night.
