Redding Police arrested a man yesterday who has now been arrested a total of six times for car theft in the last three months.
It happened around 2:40 PM yesterday, November 26th, when police responded to the 2400 block of Wilson Avenue to investigate a stolen car. The owner of the stolen car told officers that an unknown man had stolen his red Nissan Sentra. Police then searched the nearby area, but couldn't find any trace of the suspect.
Then, around 4:00 PM a police officer spotted the reportedly stolen Nissan along Loma Vista Drive and Roesner Avenue. As the officer went to investigate, the suspect, 35-year old Khampasong Phaviseth left the car and reportedly began running away on foot.
Multiple officers joined the foot pursuit, including department K-9 Duke. Police say Phaviseth continually refused commands to stop, and eventually tried to complete his escape by fleeing into the busy intersection of Churn Creek Road and Loma Vista Drive. It was here that officers deployed K-9 Duke, who ultimately took down Phaviseth.
This is far from the first time Phaviseth has had a run-in with police. In just the past three months, he's been arrested six times, five of which were related to stolen vehicles. At the time of his arrest, Phaviseth was on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS). Back in 2016, he was also arrested for leading police on a similar foot chase.
Phaviseth was treated at a local hospital for his injuries, and has since been booked into the Shasta County Jail for a variety of theft-related charges.
