Jets' Rooting Guide for NFL Playoff Implications of Week 12

Alex Ballentine

The New York Jets' playoff hopes hit a snag in Week 10 with a loss to the New England Patriots, but they are far from eliminated.

In fact, if the postseason were to start today, the Jets would be the final team in with the seventh seed in the AFC. They still hold a half-game lead over those Patriots after New England's loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Thanksgiving.

None of that will matter if the Jets don't get back on track, though. We know the quarterback play will be different. Head coach Robert Saleh made the bold decision to bench Zach Wilson amid the playoff pursuit.

Saleh's team will have to find ways to create better offensive output than the three points they mustered against New England, but it also wouldn't hurt to get some help to boost those playoff chances.

Here's a look at three games that could improve their odds and who the Jets faithful should be pulling for.

Jets fans shouldn't hold their breath on this one. The 1-8-1 Houston Texans are the league's worst team through 11 weeks of action, and it doesn't look like a title they are ready to relinquish.

They are coming off a 23-10 loss to the Washington Commanders and haven't won a game since Week 5 when they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 13-6. They've since dropped five straight games, and only two of them have been by one score.

If the Jets are to have any hope the Texans can help them out this weekend it's in a similar quarterback situation to their own. After watching Davis Mills struggle for most of the season, Lovie Smith is opting for Kyle Allen to make the start.

Allen is in his fifth year in the league and has a 7-10 record as a starter. His last start came with Washington, and he's thrown for 24 touchdowns to 17 interceptions in that span. Perhaps, he'll be able to provide a spark and offer newfound hope for an offense that has some weapons in Brandin Cooks, rookie Dameon Pierce and Nico Collins.

Of course, that doesn't answer how the Texans plan on slowing down Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but it does create a glimmer of hope that Houston can see some improvement on offense.

The 6-4 Cincinnati Bengals hold a slight edge over the Jets by virtue of tiebreakers in the playoff picture. However, a Bengals loss and a Jets win would move Gang Green up to the sixth seed and get them one step closer to clinching a spot.

The Bengals have been an interesting team all season. They made a run to the Super Bowl last season that made it easy to forget they were just 10-7 in the regular season and were on the bubble for much of 2021.

They are once again taking that path to contention again. The offense has sputtered at times from an inability to run the ball consistently, and the passing game has suffered from their penchant to allow Joe Burrow to absorb plenty of sacks.

Now that offense is going to have to pick up a big win over a Titans team that plays good defense under Mike Vrabel. Joe Mixon has already been declared out of the game with a concussion, while Ja'Marr Chase will reportedly be a game-time decision with a hip injury.

Meanwhile, Derrick Henry has had an extended week to get right for the game. The Titans played last Thursday, so he's getting 10 days of rest to be in top form to face a Bengals defense that is 18th in rushing yards allowed per game.

This is all good news for the Jets, who should be rooting for the Bengals to be knocked down a peg.

The New England Patriots are right behind the Jets in the playoff race, but it's the Los Angeles Chargers who are a scary bunch for the teams on the outside looking in.

Quarterback play can be such a factor as teams make their final stretch run and get into the playoffs. No one has a better quarterback on the fringe of the race than the Chargers with Justin Herbert.

The third-year quarterback's play has fallen off a little bit this season, but he's also been without Keenan Allen for a large part of the campaign. Now Mike Williams is struggling with injury.

Allen came back after reaggravating his hamstring injury in Week 11 with five catches for 94 yards. The Chargers' offense looked revitalized as they went toe-to-toe with the Kansas City Chiefs in a 30-27 loss.

That should be fine by Jets fans. It kept the Chargers out of the picture for another week. A loss to the Cardinals would be even more painful for them. Kyler Murray is expected to be back after missing the last two weeks with a hamstring injury.

That should be great news for a team coming off a 38-10 beatdown from the San Francisco 49ers last week.

If they bounce back with a win over the Chargers, it would be devastating for Los Angeles' attempt to claw their way back in after a slow start to the season.
