NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State visits Chartway Arena this Sunday as Old Dominion women's basketball hosts the Eagles for a 2 p.m. game.
 
Fans can watch the contest on ESPN+ as Ted Alexander and Kim Aston call the game or listen to the ODU Sports Radio Network to hear Matthew Hatfield and Susan Montgomery. Live stats will also be available.
 
The Series
Sunday's matchup marks just the third meeting between the two teams. ODU defeated Coppin State 75-67 on Nov. 30, 2017 in Norfolk, Virginia as Kelly Loftus and Victoria Morris combined for 23 points and seven threes in the final quarter. It was the first career win for former ODU head coach Nikki McCray-Penson.
 
The two teams last met on the court on Dec. 29, 2018, an 81-51 final that went to the Monarchs. ODU shot 53 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc while holding the visitors to 27 percent shooting. Ajah Wayne led the offense with 13 points, Mariah Adams tallied 11 points with five assists and three blocks, Maggie Robinson had 12 points and Taylor Edwards netted 11 points.
 
About ODU
The Monarchs (2-3) held a 10-point halftime lead but could not hold off the Phoenix late as ODU dropped a close game at Elon, 71-68 last Tuesday. Jordan McLaughlin scored a season-high 15 points and Amari Young reached 11 points with nine rebounds to lead the Monarchs in the loss. Kaye Clark and Althea Kara Angeles finished with nine points each and Jada Duckett was next with seven points.
 
ODU's leading scorers are McLaughlin (11.2 points per game), Clark (9.4) and Makayla Dickens (9.3). Dickens has knocked down 6-of-20 (.300) shots from distance while Clark has made 5-of-18 (.278) three-point attempts. Young and Brianna Jackson lead the team on the glass with 6.4 and 6.2 rebounds per game, respectively. Clark enters Sunday ranked sixths nationally in steals per game (4.20) and seventh in total steals (21) while Young has made a team-high five blocks.
 
As a team, the Monarchs are shooting .364 (115-for-316) from the field, .265 (22-for-83) from long range and .555 (61-for-110) at the free-throw line. As of Nov. 25, ODU is 20th in the country in steals per game (13.0), 23rd in turnovers forced per game (23.00) and 34th in turnover margin (6.80). ODU owns a narrow +0.8 scoring margin through five games this season.
  
About Coppin State
The Eagles (2-4) picked up a 58-53 win over Saint Peter's last Sunday, but fell 67-60 at Rhode Island on Tuesday. Jewel Watkins and Mossi Staples scored 18 points each and Hope Evans also reached double-digits with 11 points. Staples pulled down a team-high six boards with three steals while Watkins and Colleen Bucknor had five rebounds apiece.
 
Staples is averaging 14.3 points per game and Watkins 11.3 points to pace Coppin State's offense. The pair have combined to make 20 three-pointers while Staples has converted 25-of-30 (.833) shots at the line. She is also the team leader in assists (22) and steals (14). Bucknor is grabbing 6.5 rebounds per outing and Watkins and Jalynda Salley own five blocks each.
 
Coppin State has been outscored by an average of 3.6 points through its first six games. The Eagles are shooting .340 (109-for-321) from the floor, .245 (27-for-110) from the arc and .670 (65-of-97) at the charity stripe. The team is currently sixth nationally with 12.7 fouls per game.
 
The Eagles were picked to finish third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Poll as voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Additionally, Jaia Alexander was named the Preseason Player of the Year and to the Preseason All-MEAC First Team. Staples earned Second Team honors and Salley landed on the Third Team.
 
Head coach Jermaine Woods is in his first season leading the Eagles program after serving the past two seasons as an associate coach. Prior to his time in Baltimore, he spent three seasons at Wake Forest following two seasons as an assistant coach at ODU. As a student-athlete, Woods spent one year at Belmont Abbey College before transferring to Christopher Newport University where he was named a D3hoops.com All-American, a two-time All-South Region selection, Dixie Conference Tournament MVP and First Team All-Conference honoree. He was also tabbed Newcomer of the Year and was the leading scorer while helping the Captains reach the NCAA Division III Elite 8.

Single-game tickets for regular season men's and women's basketball games will go on sale later in the month. Single-game ticket prices start at $18 for men's games and $11 for women's games, with special pricing for senior citizens, ODU faculty and staff, youth (12 and younger) and members of the military. ODU students can register for student tickets for free to any ODU men's and women's home game.
