Small business Saturday is a newer trend created by American Express in 2010 but it asks shoppers to go local after Black Friday.
We visited two local businesses in Scranton: Little Wild Refillery and Over the Moon.
Brittany Grasso Salvatori is the owner of Little Wild Refillery.
“When you support a small business, more money goes into your local economy and your community. You’re helping families," said Grasso Salvatori. “You’re seeing that within your community.”
She sells zero waste refills for everyday products like cleaning and personal care supplies.
They have been around for 6 months and this is their first small business Saturday.
“It’s been an awesome turnout," said Grasso Salvatori. "Yesterday was really great, today was really great. People I think are really starting to make more meaningful gifting decisions and supporting small businesses. Yes, it’s been really good.”
Grasso Salvatori said she enjoys helping out the community and the planet with something you don’t usually see in chain stores.
The owner of Over the Moon is Kathi Davis. She says business is so far so good.
“We see a lot of people who come in from out of town for the holidays and stop in at the regular stores to say hello and do a little shopping. So it’s just reconnecting with people," said Davis.
Over the Moon is a gift boutique that specializes in registries for brides and moms
Davis said people are looking for more of a personal touch and presentation that they offer over large chains.
Danielle Pacyna and Maura Holden were just some of the people supporting small businesses today.
“A lot of our friends just had babies so we thought this was a good place to stop and see all the holiday lights and décor," said Holden. "It was nice because we don’t usually the small businesses so seeing them and all the stuff they’ve done for the holidays, you know it’s a really good chance.”
