Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are hard at work putting together the fifth and final season of the Netflix science-fiction show. But as it it turns out, the ending is something that they originally planned for season 2.
Speaking at WGFestival, the brothers discussed the success of the show and how it has affected season 5.
Ross said: "The success of season 1 freaked us out and then we knew we needed to build up this bigger world, that this was going to be ongoing. But it was way too much — [five times] more ideas than we needed, or [10 times].

"For season 5, we're pulling from a lot of those big season 2 ideas… A lot of our big ending stuff has pulled from stuff that we thought was going to be in season 2."
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Duffer brothers had time to outline Season 5 before Season 4 was released. Then, once they got feedback on Season 4, they went back to the writing board.
"We reread the document," said Matt. "We’re like, 'That's cool, that's cool. That could be a lot better. That could be a lot better.' The ending is a little bit different [now]. A lot of the big ideas are the same, but the stuff that happens within, it's very different."

The duo also recently teased that season 5 is going to feel like a "culmination" of everything that's come before, not just in terms of the plot, but the tone.
Ross said: "I think that what we’re trying to do is go back to the beginning a little bit, in sort of the tone of [season] one. But also scale-wise, it's more aligned with what [season] four is. So, hopefully, it's got a little bit of everything."
