A Milford woman whose son was critically injured in a car accident is in the process of bringing him home.
Yamil Lopez's son Alex Rivera, Jr, also known as Jay Jay, was in a car accident in June 2020 in Bridgeport and was not expected to survive.
The accident left him a quadriplegic and only able to communicate by blinking his eyes.
Lopez says she will never forget telling her him, "You can go walk into the light, and be with God if you want to. But if you want to fight, let mommy know and I'm here to fight with you until the end.”
“He’ll blink like he wants to fight,” she said. “So, I just want to give him a chance."
Jay Jay has been on a ventilator since the accident. He had been living in a nursing home in Bristol until Lopez decided to bring him back to Milford.
Lopez, a licensed practical nurse, told News 12 Jay Jay has been accepted under a program called Money Follows the Person, so her son can be cared for his family, who have undergone special training.
Lopez says the program has already helped pay for things like a new disability access ramp, which was recently installed. However, she says the family has not found a doctor who will come to their home and see Jay Jay. She hopes by sharing her story, a doctor will help.
"When it's for your loved ones, you go above and beyond," Lopez says. "And that's what I want to do for him. I just want to bring him home. That's all I'm asking for. I'm not asking for nothing else. You know I'm just asking to have him home. If he passes at home, I know he's going to pass in peace."
