If a tree falls on a car, will you hear it drive away? -- Moreland Hills Police Blotter

In an extended string of incidents and accidents on Nov. 19, police had their hands full after a sudden snow and ice storm coinciding with morning rush hour led to numerous mishaps and at least one major road closure on SOM Center Road (Route 91), which was reopened after about an hour.

MORELAND HILLS, Ohio

Damage to vehicle, debris on street: Miles Road

First responders were summoned around 7 p.m. Nov. 19 after a tree fell on a car between Lansdowne and Boulder Creek drives, with the driver inside uninjured. Officers briefly directed westbound traffic as the Mazda was removed under its own power and debris cleared from Miles Road by 7:16 p.m.

Departmental information, special attention: Jackson Road

A caller reported on the afternoon of Nov. 18 that her father had his wallet, phone and keys stolen from Lifetime Fitness in Beachwood, where police recommended that officers in Moreland Hills be notified as well, to keep an eye on his home overnight in case the suspect planned any further crimes.

Assist other department: Mill Creek Lane

At the request of officers in Westlake, Moreland Hills police checked on the whereabouts of a possible hit-skip car and driver, initially at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and finding no one home at that time. At 5:19 p.m., contact was made with the owner by Moreland Hills officers and Westlake police were advised, with the investigation continuing.

Animal (deer): Chagrin Boulevard

A resident reported at 3 p.m. Nov. 14 that he was able to kill a deer in his backyard using a crossbow adding that he’d already notified state wildlife officials, who thought he had to report it to local police, who sent an officer over.

Phone message: Chagrin Boulevard

A caller reported a “suspicious woman” during the student drop-off at Brady Middle School was recording the buses and not letting cars through at 7:45 a.m. Nov. 14.

Police checked with the school and spoke with staff, and multiple reports from the school campus detail the next day revealed nothing out of the ordinary, with further investigation and traffic enforcement to follow.

Debris on street: South Woodland Road

A caller reported a large stone in the lane of travel on Route 87 at the bridge near the Metropark Polo Field at 2:15 p.m. Nov. 20. The stone was removed just after 2:30 p.m.

Assist (general), road closure: SOM Center Road, Chagrin Boulevard

During a sudden snow storm leading to icy road conditions, police closed Route 91 for about an hour Nov. 17 between Chagrin Boulevard and Hiram Trail after a caller in a Chevy Equinox reported at 6:25 a.m. that she got stuck on the big hill, then backed into an abandoned driveway to await assistance north of Hiram Hill.

Dispatchers notified the Orange City Schools Transportation Department of the closure, as police responded to a possible two-car crash on Chagrin Boulevard near Addison Lane with no injuries reported at 7:08 a.m.

At that time, drivers were having a hard time getting up the Chagrin Boulevard hill as well, with at least one tow needed.

At 7:47 a.m. officers responded to a report of a car into a tree, finding a Toyota RAV4 that slid off the roadway on Chagrin Boulevard near North Strawberry Lane. That driver escaped injury and was taken to the police station with the RAV4 needing a tow.

Meanwhile, SOM Center Road (Route 91) had been reopened to traffic just before 7:30 a.m.

A resident on Murwood Drive who was locked out of a running car in their driveway shortly before 8 a.m. had to wait about an hour to get the door open while police were out on numerous accident calls, after which entry was made to the Subaru.

Disabled motor vehicle; salt crews notified: Chagrin Boulevard

The driver of a Ford Explorer reported just after 6 a.m. Nov. 20 that the street was a sheet of ice near Chagrin River Road. Road crews were out before 6:30 a.m. and the SUV was removed at 6:36.

Traffic complaint: Meadowhill Lane

Police received a complaint about a Kubota tractor clearing driveways on the street shortly before noon on Nov. 20.

An officer responded and said the plow work checked out OK, with the Kubota occasionally having to leave the driveway aprons to turn around and no snow being left in the street.
