ATHENS, Ga. — It’s game day in the Classic City for the final time in 2022. Georgia takes on Georgia Tech in this year’s edition of Clean Old Fashioned Hate at Sanford Stadium today (12:00 p.m. ET, ESPN) with each team on a mission to accomplish something. For the Bulldogs, it’s a second straight undefeated regular season that they’re after. Kirby Smart has his team ranked No. 1 in the country with an 11-0 record after working their way through the SEC. On the other hand is interim head coach Brent Key and the 5-6 Yellow Jackets looking to make a bowl for the first time since 2018. Key took the team over with a 1-3 record and has proceeded to win more games than his predecessor, Geoff Collins, did in any single season. Could Key be the guy for the job? That conversation certainly heats up with a win today.

“We’re on to Georgia Tech, a program I know a lot about. And a coach that I have a lot of respect for,” Smart said in his opening press conference of Georgia Tech week. “Known Brent for a long time. He played at Tech while I played at Georgia. We played against each other. And we spent some summers together. And I have a lot of respect for him as a coach. You know, he was the O-line coach at Alabama one of the years we played them. And they did a really good job. His offensive lines are always physical, get after it. There’s a lot of familiarity with their staff, with ours, Chip Long, Chaney, and all the guys that have been over there. And so, they’re playing really well now. They’re playing really hard now. And I think he’s done a tremendous job at getting these guys to compete.”

In 115 all-time meetings between these two teams, Georgia holds a 69-41-5 advantage including four straight since a loss in Kirby Smart’s first season on the job. The Bulldogs won 45-0 last year in Atlanta. This will be Georgia Tech’s first trip to Athens since 2018 with the 2020 game being cancelled due to COVID-19. Georgia will recognize its seniors on the field before the game. A list of the 22 Senior Day participants can be found here.
