Manchester United Can Imagine Bringing Back 147-Goal ‘Extraordinary’ Forward

Memphis Depay

Manchester United have added Barcelona forward Memphis Depay to their list of possible options to sign as the replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, claims Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenburg. The Red Devils cut their ties with the Portuguese striker after he slandered the club in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Manchester United Thinking of Bringing Back Memphis Depay

United in Contact With Depay Over Possible Deal

Erik ten Hag has found himself short of options in the centre-forward department after the departure of Ronaldo. Anthony Martial has struggled with fitness issues all through this season, while Marcus Rashford lacks consistency as a number nine. Knowing that he’s unlikely to get big money in the January transfer window, the Dutch gaffer is entertaining the idea of bringing back Depay to Old Trafford.

Plettenburg adds that there is contact between the Red Devils, Barcelona and the striker’s representatives over a possible move in January. The La Liga club would even be willing to terminate Memphis’ contract in the winter transfer window and leave him on a free transfer, as they just want to save the money spent on his wages and get him off their financial books.

The 28-year-old has lost his place at the Spotify Camp Nou, having only made three appearances and scored one goal for the Spanish side this season.

Depay’s Eventful Year Summed Up

Depay has had quite an interesting year at the domestic level. After being signed on a free transfer by Barcelona in 2021, he went on to finish the 2021/22 season as their top scorer with 13 goals in 38 appearances – but was not able to help them win any silverware. That forced the La Liga giants to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich, after which Depay has not received any regular game-time.

The Dutchman looked to be close to an exit from the club in the summer and was even approached by multiple clubs. Depay is currently playing at the World Cup with the Netherlands, whose’ head coach Louis van Gaal called him ‘an extraordinary player’ recently. The 28-year-old has scored 147 goals in his domestic career, including just seven in 53 appearances in his torrid stint at United.
