Gastonia, Shelby football regional semifinal recaps: Burns, South Point moving on

Both Burns and South Point are bound for the regional final round of the NCHSAA state football playoffs after close wins Friday night. Here's how both moved to within a game of playing for a state championship.

2A West

Quarterback Ben Mauney threw six touchdown passes — four to wideout Ryan Thompson — as Burns held off a pesky Monroe team, 49-40. Thompson also rushed for a six-yard TD to put the game away.

Kamari Surratt also got in on the act, catching a pair of touchdown passes.

The Bulldogs (13-1) advance to the 2A West final, where they will travel to top-seeded Reidsville (13-1). The Rams were a 34-7 winner over Maiden on Friday.

3A West

Cam Medlock shouldered the load for South Point in a winning effort, rushing for 203 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries in the Red Raiders’ 28-25 win over Eastern Guilford.

Patrick Blee also rushed for a touchdown. Chanyce Ford returned a blocked punt 48 yards for a TD in the South Point (13-1) victory.

The Red Raiders move on to face East Lincoln (14-0) in the 3A West regional final.
