Matt Rhule has agreed to become Nebraska's next head coach on an eight-year contract, the team announced Saturday.
The Carolina Panthers fired Rhule in October after he served as the team's head coach for 38 games. He was in his third season of a seven-year, $62-million contract when the Panthers dismissed him.
The Cornhuskers relieved Scott Frost of his coaching duties in his fifth year with the school after a 1-2 start to the 2022 season. The program recorded a 16-31 record during his tenure. Assistant coach Mickey Joseph was promoted to interim head coach following Frost's departure.
Prior to joining the NFL, Rhule grew to prominence with successful stints at Baylor (2017-19) and Temple (2013-16). The 47-year-old is noted for turning around both programs in a short period. If Rhule accepts Nebraska's position, he'll be tasked with taking over a program that hasn't made a bowl game since 2016.
Nebraska concluded its 2022 campaign Friday with a 24-17 win against Iowa to finish 4-8.
