There are many criticisms levied toward the Academy Awards that remain consistent every time the nominations come out, for good reason when it comes to lack of diversity, elitism, and snubs that can range from baffling to insulting. One category that is met with a particular amount of frustration from both fans and creators alike is Best Animated Feature. Last year's Academy Awards were a special kind of disaster in this regard, not so much Encanto winning, but the treatment of animation as an art form through the opening speech by Halle Bailey, Lily James, and Naomi Scott. It framed animation as something that kids liked and adults endured, which displeased many in the industry, including The Lego Movie's Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Disney is no newbie to the world of live-action films, though many of its most famous films are animated. However, as early as the 1980s and 1990s, Disney was producing new, live-action content for the world to see. Within the past few years, they have been remaking some of their classic animated films and bringing them to a live-action mode.

Lance Kerwin, who became a teen heartthrob as the titular star of the coming-of-age drama series "James at 16," died Tuesday. He was 62. In a Facebook post, his daughter Savanah Kerwin wrote, "I am so sorry to those we have not been able to reach out to personally to notify but Lance Kerwin passed away yesterday morning. We appreciate all the kind words, memories, and prayers that have been shared. As the coming weeks progress, I will share more information about after life ceremonies."

The nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role at this year's Academy Awards have just been announced from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles, with the expected favorites all bagging nods—and indications are we are set to see a first-time winner of the award as well. Five actors have been recognized for the first time for their performances in the past year, which should provide a nice shake-up to the Hollywood hierarchy.

As a testament to the immense work put into Baz Luhrmann’s creative and production skills for the making of the Elvis Presley biopic astutely titled Elvis, the film has today garnered eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Austin Butler. For fans of the musical icon and those who loved the biopic, this will come across as good news. However, there is, even more, to get excited about.

Rom-coms are certainly back on trend and Emma Roberts has done her fair share in this resurgence. After starring in The Holidate and About Fate, the actress is headed to yet another romantic project in Maybe I Do. Written and directed by Michael Jacobs, the film focuses on Michelle (Roberts) and Allen (Luke Bracey), a young couple on the road to getting married. As they plan their future together, they decide to host a dinner for both of their families to get to know each other and get along. Yet, things take an unprecedented turn when the couple notices that their parents have not only met before but are currently entangled in extra-marital relationships. Michelle's mom (Diane Keaton) is having an affair with Allen's dad (William H. Macy), while Allen's mom (Susan Sarandon) is having an affair with Michelle's dad (Richard Gere). If you are in for a recommendation that includes both the new faces and veterans of this film genre, then here is when and where to watch this upcoming gem.

The 2023 Sundance Film Festival is underway and among the attendees of this year's iteration of the legendary event is Emmy winner Alexander Skarsgård. He made his way to Park City, Utah for the premiere of Brandon Cronenberg's Infinity Pool which he stars in opposite X and Pearl star Mia Goth. While he was there, however, Collider's own Perri Nemiroff had to ask about his exploits behind the camera with his project The Pack which was announced late last year. In a first for his career, Skarsgård is both starring in and directing the feature, which put him on the opposite side of the casting process for the very first time. Nemiroff asked him about that new experience and how his time as an actor informed his search for his cast.

This past weekend, the second episode of HBO’s The Last Of Us premiered. While fans overall praised the episode, one moment truly stole the show. Maybe I Do, a romantic comedy from the mind of Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs, centers around a young couple, Michelle (Emma Roberts) and Allen (Luke Bracey), as an awkward incident at her best friend's wedding leads Michelle to give Allen an ultimatum—24 hours to decide if their relationship is heading down the aisle or not. Thanks to a suggestion from her father, Michelle decides that in that one-day window, they should have dinner with both sets of their parents to really see if their families should be bound together forever in holy matrimony. The hitch comes from a Crazy, Stupid, Love-style twist: their parents are already having affairs with each other.

Every now and again a star will completely eviscerate their own image, playing a character worthy of Greek Tragedy for their ethical flaws and ambiguities. Humphrey Bogart certainly did in 1948 when he starred in none other than John Huston’s The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, now turning 75.

Not to be confused with the 1969 film, 2023’s Marlowe features Liam Neeson as the titular protagonist Philip Marlowe, taken from the fictional character created by Raymond Chandler. The film comes from an award-winning production team with a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Jessica Lange and Diane Kruger, to name a few. Based on the 2014 novel The Black-Eyed Blonde by John Banville, the neo-noir crime thriller is directed by Neil Jordan and written by William Monahan. Set in 1930s Los Angeles, the plot follows Marlowe, a down-on-luck private eye who is hired by a very wealthy heiress to look for her former lover.

Nothing beats a fun dinosaur flick, and soon audiences can sink their teeth into a brand-new one with the release of 65, an upcoming film starring Adam Driver. As audiences anticipate the arrival of the latest science fiction movie, a new trailer has been released teasing an action-packed prehistoric spectacle.

Jared Leto is not a movie star. Granted, many would disagree with that sentiment, and this is just a subjective opinion from one writer. Plus, in the modern world of film, it’s hard to say if anyone beyond Leonardo DiCaprio or Sandra Bullock is a movie star. In an age where even Dwayne Johnson couldn’t get people to care about Black Adam and Brad Pitt’s face wasn’t enough to turn Babylon into a box office smash, it’s no surprise Jared Leto wouldn’t qualify as a movie star. But what’s really strange about Leto is how Hollywood keeps treating and hiring him like he’s a movie star or at least the star of a recently lucrative movie. At least Johnson and Pitt have each headlined features that have cracked $100+ million since 2020. Leto’s got no discernible box office draw to speak of, yet major studios keep handing him massive projects like Tron: Ares to headline.

There’s nothing quite like kicking off the year with a good, old-fashioned romantic comedy, and audiences don’t need to wait for Valentine’s Day to experience a new one. Maybe I Do, the new film from Vertical Entertainment, is the perfect movie to cozy up with on a cold winter’s day, and Collider is excited to exclusively premiere a song from the film’s soundtrack, written and performed by “Dandelions” singer Ruth B., courtesy of Lakeshore Records and Fifth Season Music.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge will produce a series adaptation of Claudia Lux's demonic debut novel Sign Here for Amazon Studios. The darkly comedic series will explore the bureaucracy of Hell. Waller-Bridge will executive produce the project for Amazon, as part of her development deal with the streamer, according to a report from Variety; she recently renewed that deal.

At first glance, there’s a lot to love about Waking Karma, the first feature from writer and co-director Liz Fania Werner. However, despite an intriguing concept, the movie often feels like Werner and co-director Carlos Montaner lacked the time to bring the story to life in a satisfying way.

Today brought the arrival of the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming supernatural comedy feature, We Have a Ghost, and to accompany that, we’re happy to share a fresh batch of newly released images. Starring David Harbour (Stranger Things) as a silent and comedically spooky ghost named Ernest, the film also stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as the father of the family who has just moved into Ernest’s haunted domain.
