5 Minnesota chefs make the cut as 2023 James Beard Award semifinalists
Five Minnesota chefs were announced Wednesday to be among the semifinalists at the annual James Beard Awards, one of the industry’s most prestigious honors. Café Cerés chef Shawn McKenzie received the state’s only national nod. McKenzie co-founded the restaurant with two locations in Minneapolis. McKenzie is also the executive pastry chef at Rustica Bakery, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

Xcel Energy to add iron-air battery system to store electricity in Becker
Xcel Energy plans to add a battery storage system at the site of its Sherco coal-fired power plant in central Minnesota. Xcel is partnering with Form Energy, a Massachusetts company, to install iron-air battery systems at two of its retiring coal plants: in Becker, Minn., and Pueblo, Colo. The systems are able to store energy for 100 hours, longer than a typical lithium battery.

Red Wing woman pleads guilty in death of newborn baby found along Mississippi River
A 50-year-old Red Wing woman pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a charge of second-degree murder in the death of a baby found on a Mississippi River beach nearly 20 years ago. Jennifer Lynn Matter was charged last year in the 2003 death of the newborn boy after DNA evidence identified her as the mother of that child, as well as a newborn girl, found dead several years earlier.

Officer wounded by gunfire while trying to make arrest in White Bear Lake
Authorities in White Bear Lake say a police officer was shot and wounded while trying to make an arrest on Tuesday night. A statement from police said the incident happened about 10 p.m., as officers were reportedly trying to arrest a person on the 3000 block of Karth Road — at a set of apartment complexes on the northwest corner of McKnight Road and Interstate 694, on the south edge of White Bear Lake.

'We don’t want compromise': East Phillips residents oppose plans to demolish Roof Depot
