Carbon man gets time-served in assault case

A Carbon County man who assaulted a woman, and then resisted arrest, was sentenced to time-served on Tuesday in the county court after pleading guilty to two criminal counts.

Jamalie Ray Stanley, 36, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded guilty to one count each of resisting arrest and institutional vandalism for an incident on March 28 in Jim Thorpe. In exchange for the plea a felony count of strangulation was dropped by the district attorney’s office.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Robert Carelli on March 28, Stanley assaulted and choked the woman around 5 a.m. at a residence in the 600 block of South Street in the borough.

The woman’s two sons heard Stanley assaulting their mother in her bedroom and intervened. Stanley then fled.

Carelli arrived and called to Stanley, who was hiding behind a car, but he took off down the street. At around 6:38 a.m. patrolman Frank Buonaiuto of the Franklin Township police saw him walking down Route 903 in a southbound direction.

Carelli arrived and was attempting to place Stanley in handcuffs when he resisted arrest. It eventually took four officers to get Stanley under control and into the police vehicle.

While at the hospital, Stanley was still uncooperative and occasionally combative with officers and medical staff.

Stanley also broke a restraining strap device while at the hospital.

Serfass sentenced Stanley to time-served (238 days) to one day less 24 months in prison, ordered him to render 100 hours of community service, pay court costs of over $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee and get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment.

Stanley has been in the county prison since the day of his arrest.
