We have experienced of late so many examples of Republican efforts to thwart the will of Ohio voters. Earlier this year, we saw Republican officials and legislators blatantly disregarding the Ohio constitutional amendments Ohio voters overwhelmingly put in place to curtail gerrymandering. These Republicans thumbed their noses not only at voters but also at the Ohio Supreme Court, which time and again ruled their actions unconstitutional.
Now, unhappy with the voters’ election of certain members to the State Board of Education, Republicans have proposed a bill that will gut the authority of the board, so these new members are unable to do what they were elected to do.
And The Plain Dealer has also reported that lawmakers and Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose want to make it more difficult for Ohio voters to pass a constitutional amendment by requiring a 60% approval vote. LaRose claims this has nothing to do with the fact that another attempt to reform gerrymandering by constitutional amendment is in the works, or that there may soon be a proposal for an amendment to protect a woman’s right to choose.
The question must be asked: Why are Ohio Republicans so fearful of Ohio voters?
