Feather Rose Burglarized on Thanksgiving
As Rial balanced family obligations and preparing a Thanksgiving meal, an unidentified male used a cement block to shatter the glass on the front door to her business around 9:30 p.m. on November 24. The burglar made off with jewelry and clothing. This is the second time Feather Rose has been targeted by burglars within the last year.
Rial, with the support of the community, was recently able to purchase the building her business has resided in since 2015. The local business owner is known for her generosity with those that are in need. The thefts have left Rial disheartened – and mad.
“How dare people do this to people?” she questions.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified and officers, along with Rial, spent Thanksgiving evening searching for the suspect to no avail.
Today, Rial is hoping the community can help identify the burglar as she picks up the pieces from the latest theft. After the last break-in, the local houseless community were able to locate items stolen and return them to Rial, helping offset some of the damage done.In the most recent theft, Rial says the door the burglar shattered was worth more than the items stolen, leaving the strapped business owner in a financial lurch. After using every bit of savings she had accumulated, in addition to community help, Rial was able to purchase the building, leaving her depleted. With insurance and property tax due, Rial was already struggling. Now she has the cost of repairing her door that is currently boarded over, making it impossible for customers to enter her business on the busiest shopping day of the year.
Rial is hopeful her husband will be able to figure out a temporary solution that will allow her to open her business today.
“I just can’t get a break,” she says, exasperated.

Another unemployed working age man out on the loose
Why are working age people refusing to work the majority of their waking hours in exchange for enough money to share an apartment with strangers and then die in a horrible situation? It’s like they are lazy or something.
I worked my waking hours and bought a house. No strangers.
So sorry this happened! It shouldn’t have.
So you own the business? And, you own the commercial real estate that the business sits on? Can we assume you own your home as well then? What model Tesla do you drive from your owned home to your owned business that sits on your owned piece of commercial real estate?
And you want us to pay for replacing the glass that a burglar broke on your door?
You sound very out of touch with the struggles of average community members. Maybe you aught to just take the loss of a window and be thankful for your good fortune. Happy Thanksgiving
Nowhere did Shanda ask for a handout. She and I simply ask for anyone that can identify the suspect to call the police, something that benefits all the small business owners.
She is a generous and beloved business owner who was the unfortunate victim of burglary. As the article states, she has been struggling, not rolling in it nor driving a Tesla. And even if she was, it doesn’t make robbing her business justified nor indicate that she shouldn’t ask the community for help identifying the burglar.
Dear Thank You?,
Shanda built the business and supports local nonprofits including the shelter for battered women and children, homeless help, our local theater, and many others. She is the heart of generosity in our community. She does not own the location outright, she has to meet a hefty mortgage every month. She lives very humbly and does not drive or own a luxury vehicle. The person who is out of touch is you, with your nasty assumptions about a gem in our community. Yes, I’m one of the community members who supported her purchase of the building, and yes, I seriously wonder whether you lift a finger to benefit the community you claim to be an average member of.
No where did I ask for anything.
Nor do I drive a fancy car or take vacations.
Just reporting a crime.
I actually work 10 hour days and give back to my community daily.
Not sure why you are so bitter but your attitude is what is wrong with the world!
$5000.00 in stolen merch and a minimum of $1000.00 to fix my door…..
Yes I am dealing with it.
Happy Thanksgiving to you!
[edit] Those nice folks work hard and give so much back to those in need. Check your facts and watch your mouth.
The left has been on a race to the ethical and moral bottom for decades…
Not that it’s right what he did,its wrong !
but your comment is ridiculous, their are no jobs in this area, legalization wiped the industry dry. Alot of people can’t just pack up and move to the city or out of state to get a job.
But alotnof the problems in this area are caused by locals bringing in out of towers to work. Then they don’t pay their workers and they end up on the streets. These break ins are known as smash and grabs in the city and happen daily. People don’t get punished for actions, judges just release them. Crime is on the up and up. People steal to eat, I mean a loaf of bread is $6, peanut butter is $4 and a jar of jelly is $5. $15 bucks to make a few pb&js.
Actually, that’s quite a few PBJ’s…at least 10-15…so a buck, buck n a half a sandwich! Very doable.
PS My bread is around $3 a loaf, which lowers my cost of goods consumed!
That $6 dollar loaf comment has me questioning this poster too!
Nor Cal might be gluten intolerant…
You obviously aren’t aware of the price of gluten free bread…
$7-$10 per loaf in Garberville…
$6+ish at WinCo…
You are so entitled. There are jobs in the area. Learn a new skill [edit] Lazy people steal to eat. There are endless programs to help people, but no they break into good peoples lives and ruin them just like their own.
For real! I’ve heard the wind farm project is going to need an army of welders which one can train for at college of the redwoods…
A jobs in the Trades can be found most anywhere and CR has the classes to learn a skill…
People routinely do “just pack up and move to the city or out of state to get a job.” There are no indigenous humanoids in North America so every single person here- tribal or not- is the descendent of people who moved to get a better livelihood.
The culture of demanding adherence to some laws but admiring violating other laws is peculiarly endemic in southern Humboldt. Why is it “honest” to pay under the table wages to undocumented workers, not pay taxes or fair labor law required benefits and render vigilante justice in a proscribed business but just horrible to break a door down in a business to take stuff? Seemingly, doing what harms others is just fine if they don’t know them personally. Too bad it’s difficult to restrain behavior if it’s a personal choice to be law abiding. Someone sooner or later will have a looser standard of “acceptable” crime.
I think we already do.
Do what?
I was referring to the last sentence of your post.
”Someone sooner or later will have a looser standard of “acceptable” crime.”
I hear McDonald’s starts at 15 and always hiring
…and all the cheeseburgers 🍔 n fries 🍟 you can stomach!
Minimum wage does not cut the mustard.
Sure it does. If you dont have any other marketable skill it’s the only choice.
As if stealing pocketsfull of jewelry from a THRIFT STORE cuts gallons and gallons of mustard
Ya, now only if there were a McDonalds in SoHum! Or a Walmart…
The best thing that’s happened to the emerald triangle people getting way too spoiled let people work for money like they should appreciate what they have and be humble
A $6 loaf? What are you using a Brio loaf for your pb&j? 😂 You need to shop at WinCo or the franz outlet store has discounted bread too. Also food for people etc…
Price of food skyrockets when you buy Dave’s Killer bread and organic pb&j
Last loaf i bought, cheap wheat bread grocery outlet. 1.99
We’re talking Garberville, where an item that costs me 1.89 at Winco costs me $6.98 here. Many don’t have the money to drive north to save the money shopping. I’ve spoken to elders that have no transportation or ability to heft grocery bags to a bus stop that ration food often to be able to pay their bills.
It’s a vicious cycle.
However, none of those people I know that are struggling are out there robbing stores.
I feel for Anyone who doesn’t have the means to shop out of town. Rays and Geigers here in laytonville know they’re the only game in town and set prices that are highway robbery
Yeah pretty sad when the store in Leggett has better prices than giegers and rays
Tells us all something about corporate vs hometown business. Can go across the street to fosters and get many items for a bit less
Geigers shd give food away if you take a beef in to be cut and wrapped. They liberally help themselves to the prime cuts you get half of your rib and filet. But plenty of chuck and burger. Easy come easy go ?
How much does it cost to drive from SoHum to Winco?
I don’t regularly buy bread, but I priced eggs at Ray’s in Gville last Friday. $5.99 a dozen for the plain old Everyday Essential store brand.
Those of you who live up north may not realize that you’re SoHum neighbors live in a food desert.
I’ve gone through 4 workers over tha last month down here in SoHum trying to harvest my last greenhouse. They can’t fucking show up on time or at all. It’s pathetic. It’s easy work too, sitting in a chair plucking fan leaves off plants that someone brings to you, $20 per hr.
If you are punctual and have good work ethic, there is more work around here than you can handle. That’s been my experience over the last decade. But more than half the workforce around here is on drugs or lazy.
I’m tempted to take that job. I don’t even know anyone who bothers to big leaf anymore
Looking for local work bennyrico69atgmail
Why don’t you have a trim-pro classic for the big leaves?
Do yourself and your people proper.
There is an easier way.
It’s actually the easiest.
It’s also the most cost effective, most energy efficient, and it’s eco friendly…
But also, it’s also a guarded trade secret, that I’m sworn never to divulge…
I have one. Use it for b grade and bottom branches. On big nice buds, I don’t like how trichomes rub off on the grate, it cuts off the tips of sugar leaves, and it leaves crows feet. Removing fan leaves makes for better trim too, ours consistently tests above 15%. I also have limited drying space and can cram a lot more in there without the fan leaves on. If you’re careful cutting the plants, picking leaves, and hanging them, it makes for a better quality product. I never lay my buds down flat on their sides, on top of each other, cram them in a bin or get compressed at all.
So much for holiday spirit.
The worst part is shanda would have given the guy some clothes, and helped him out
A decent camera would be a wise investment
Recently bought a building in Garberville? Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
Maybe they love the community and want to add to the economy in a permanent way. Maybe some think it is worth trying to do something in an area they love. Sounds like there is a lot of love in the community for the business maybe it goes both ways.
I have been open 7 years. Lived here and raised a family for 40.
I love my Community and am not leaving.
So yes I bought my building to save my business.
We love you too, Shanda.
Don’t let the haters and thieves get you down…
They are just trying to steal your thunder.
( They can’t handle your thunder, girl…)
See you around, and keep up the good work!
And thanks for being there to help everyone out, whatever they may need, whenever they may need it, when they’re in a bind, including myself…
And thanks to Walt, and Tabitha, and all your other awesome help…
Have a great day!!!
Don’t let the haters get you down.
Love and support to you and everyone else who wants to be here and wants to help make things better.
Hopefully a tipster can id the ahole burgler.
what is going to happen when they do find the burglar? A stiff talking to? A free ride to eureka then released back on the streets?
Maybe he’ll get stuck in Eureka, no ride back, that’s Fortuna’s strategy seems to work
Bums To lazy to work
@ Kym, this meme has been used before. As per your statements regarding me posting 1 photo, Squirrel should not be allowed to repost memes.
TRB, Kym is on a much-deserved break. My interpretation of the rule is not that a meme can only be used once but that the photo that you want to keep using is disturbing. It was used in the news article just as the antisemitic flyers were used but we won’t allow those to be reused in the comment section as they too are disturbing.
I’m sure Kym will respond when she has taken a moment to enjoy her family.
I do appreciate your response and Kym’s break.
What is disturbing regarding the photo in your opinion?
I hear a lot of commentor complaints regarding traffic accident photos – but what is the complaint against this protest photo?
What are the guidelines for “too disturbing” now, and who do they disturb?
I have to ask because otherwise it seems I have been dealt too many rules that apply to no one else.
I think the barometer here is Kym as it’s her site. Sometimes her and I differ on what I think is too much – although she is always willing to listen to my reasoning for whichever way I fall, ultimately, it is her site.
My personal opinion on that pic is that it shows a local youth near a man making a grotesque gesture. News wise it conveys the message, much as images from wrecks convey images, however, to be used repeatedly, exposing a local youth to further your narrative seems overboard. There are a lot of memes out there to choose from to make your point, especially cartoon memes like the one you’re reporting.
Heinous shit happens and to report on it we often have to use those images as much as they may disturb any of us. To use them in an argument doesn’t seem to me to justify the use.
And none of that truly matters when you realize this is a business, privately owned, in which the owner is the one that gets to make those calls.
Do you truly feel like you’re dealt rules that only apply to you, essentially that Kym is picking on you? From my limited experience with moderating the last year, I find that Kym has an endless amount of patience for your shenanigans because she also values what you bring to the conversation, when otherwise, your comments may have been deleted.
I don’t know if you know how to skirt the rules exceedingly well or if her saint-like patience to encourage thoughtful discourse is the reason more of your comments don’t end up in the trash. There are days when a few of the more prolific commenters get on a role and I throw my hands up and leave you all on moderation for Kym to sort the mess when she gets back… Otherwise, there’d be a whole lot of comments in the trash.
From where I sit, I don’t see a bias against you at all. I think if you really think about it, you won’t either.
Mostly agree with you.
But I’m not going to hit the horse any more here.
Thank you LM
‘Why Can’t They Take NO for an Answer’
Mar 13, 2015 | ‘Manipulation’
“Misconception #3: A conversation isn’t over until both parties agree it is. When someone isn’t being reasonable, looking for agreement – on the issue, or even on whether to continue the discussion – is pointless. You have the right to walk away. This is the time to use it.”
Your reply is a good read in itself.
Well thought out and informative.
“When someone says, “I won’t take no for an answer,” you can simply let that person know that acceptance is not required. You can do that in a number of ways:
The Light-Hearted Response: Sorry … no returns or exchanges on this one!
The Confrontational Response: Take it or leave it; the answer’s still the same! (Not recommended, unless you’re consciously choosing to be aggressive!)
The Understanding Response: I understand that this is difficult for you, but this is important to me, too. I’m not going to change my mind.
The All-Purpose Response: I hear you, but my answer is still no.
The Non-Response: Ignore the objection and carry on without giving in.”
Or,if you are a Christian or even a Pagan you can light your Saint Fauci votive candle and say a prayer for all involved.
Ouch. “HER & I”?
She and I.
I hope it didn’t hurt too much Vet, because I make mistakes often, especially when responding in the comment section. Thanks for taking the time to notify me of the mistake.
There is people on here who think that every t needs be crossed, every i dotted..
It’s all good. I appreciate the catches on the articles. We try to proofread ourselves and each other and still miss stuff, especially when we’re in a rush.
I don’t sweat the errors on text, social media, or comment threads. I’m not perfect by any means and as long as the message is conveyed, I’m okay with the mistakes.
The articles are a different beast.
If the worst things about me are spelling errors and incorrect grammar here and there, I’ll take it.
🧐I’m curious as to why the meme is too disturbing? It doesn’t disturb me AT ALL. I just rolled right by it not giving it any thought. I mean I know when I express my faith it’s unbearably disturbing for some, but that? I don’t get it. I must be missing something. 🤔
The meme wasn’t disturbing but rather a debate of using memes multiple times. There is a separate issue with another photo that TRB wants to use that Kym will not allow.
Yes. Agree or not. If. Everyone. Doesnt get to voice their opinion its not free speech. If you dis agree. Simply scroll past. Otherwise its only time till you get cancelled or censored yourself. People dont want to hear about your faith in God. After all a godless society is working so well for us. But we all will stand before him and give an account for out lives. God is like gravity believe in him or not hes still God Walk off a bridge and see what happens. It dsnt matter if you ignore or disagree you still fall
SWTK,
Here, the photo I would have posted but apparently fell into the “not allowed here” category is a photo that Kym used in a mask protests article.
It shows perfectly the mentality and values of SOME anti-mask pro-trumpers.
I can’t repost it, but you can see it here:
https://kymkemp.com/2021/11/04/humboldt-county-public-health-plans-to-drop-outdoor-mask-mandate-sets-goalpost-for-end-of-masking/
Brian, you are one persistent…@#%@…
I don’t really mind the link. It’s just the endless pushing the boundaries that are set…It’s exhausting.
You know I respect you.
But with all your verbal allowances regarding “free speech”, you must allow me a little shock and interest in you not allowing me to post photos that you posted yourself.
I mean, you just can’t explain that.
So now you just say it “disturbs” you.
Right. OK.
Its your space and I’ve acknowledged that for years on end, but if you don’t like me pointing out the weirdness of this situation than, “just ignore the comments”, as you have for years suggested readers do.
Regards. Best wishes.
🤔🧐
Is all the needling really helpful…???
😁
Looks like a long ongoing power trip to me, over who’s going to set the rules on this site.
I know who I vote for.
My understanding is one meme per article, not that a meme can be used only once on RHBB site. I’m unlikely to reopen this article so hopefully I’ll receive an email from Kym or a friendly notice in another manner if I’m wrong rather than getting banned for an inadvertent misunderstanding.
If someone repeatedly uses the same meme, I ask them to stop. I thought I had asked you before but possibly I’ve mixed you with someone else.
Fortuna pd literally got caught on camera dropping their buns off in garberville
Bums?
No, if they have leftover buns they donate them to the bums in Garberville .
Yes bums
Eureka not only sends us their Bums, they put them up in the Lone Pine Motel.
This is horrible.
How mean!! I hope your door gets repaired quickly so you can function. Hopefully no one will buy the guy’s stolen goods and they get returned to you… again.
Maybe we could take up a collection
A cheaper way to do burglar bars is to use external metal fencing that you cut to fit with a grinder.
Seems strange that somebody would break into a thrift store to rob it, kind of a low-end target.
Sadly, that’s price of doing business in Garbageville these days.
Well he does wear glasses…
same thing happened at that Mexican place in eureka by the court house/ pro pacific
Dropped the glass on the front door recently. What do you get when you rob a Mexican restaurant??
Burritos there are wicked good tho so🧐
When we simplify the issues to “out of town brought in by others,” or people who are “too lazy to work” we accomplish absolutely nothing. For decades we’ve put band aids on the majority of society’s very real and impactful ills and now we’re experiencing the cause and effect of such neglect of community. Now this isn’t reflective of our community in particular- but we’re also no exception. With neglect to mental health, the ever growing and blatant issue of income equality and then you add the post covid psychosis when literally EVERY SINGLE HUMAN you encounter has a chip on their shoulder (like they were the ONLY ones experiencing hard times in covid, not everyone) and you’ve got a huge mess that will not be solved by a continuation of “lock them up” either. We’ve been doing over incarceration for decades and people STILL be committing crimes. If people feel like they’re required to dedicate every second of their life to work jobs they hate and have no long term benefit to them besides stress and living paycheck to paycheck (and STILL not enough) then why would we continue doing so?? What’s the payoff?? Little to none. We’re seeing society commit slow suicide in many non traditional ways and it’s not gonna be bandaids that solve this shit.
If we simplify the issues to exclude recreational drug use and condemn the “lock them up” solution as well, we still have a big mess. Most people are not “required to dedicate every second of their life to work jobs they hate” anyway. Hateful work unfortunately is what others are willing to pay for- doing stuff that is not enjoyable at a cost they can afford. If it’s too expensive, they bite the bullet and do it themselves. That is the unfortunate nature of an economy for unskilled labor. Always has been.
There never were many magical fun jobs in the world in the best of times and these are not the best of times. Strangely enough, people do tend to think that “things” were better times at some “Golden Age” in the past. “Golden Ages” are an illusion created by selecting facts. Ah… The good old days of the “Rat Race” and how to avoid it. There is always someone selling that idea. The selling of which is their idea of how to avoid it.
I have worked construction and found it very satisfying…A job well done..
Landscaping, carpentry etc. etc. Even painting a house or putting on a new roof. All can be done with pride..Even ranch work will leave you with a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day.
Pulled green chain for awhile, even took pride in the work I did there.
Sorry to hear you got stuck in a job you hated, but there is so many satisfying jobs to be done and you leave with a good feeling at the end of the day..
Wrong Guest.
?
Spot on…I was a Music Major but ended up with a career in law enforcement.
Most people around the world are happy they have a job that pays the bills every month and puts a roof over their heads. Life is tough and owes us nothing but we get by… I’ve said many times that the left is on a race, to the ethical and moral bottom and we’re living the result.
This is to the jackass the remark about Santa driving a Tesla! Apparently you don’t know her from a bucket of paint. I will never forget when somebody stole my jacket and I was in a bad situation she gave me a line of credit and eventually I paid her for that jacket. Something that may be small to you is something that is huge to others such as being able to stay warm on a cold night. There ain’t no doubt when Santa’s having a bad day she can be a little rough around the edges but give Grace we’re Grace’s too she’s got a heart of gold. I don’t forget things like that so when she was going through it and she thought she was going to lose her business I made sure that I contributed something to helping her to the cause of saving her business. So before you open the big intelligent mouth of yours it’s so collegic, treat others as you would want to be treated, but you put out there and energy eventually will come back to you! Check yourself before you wreck yourself boy !!!!! Hold your head high Shanda we love you very much !!!!!!!!
I seen the typo that’s spelled out Santa, so before anybody gets all over me I meant Shanda! It’s the microphone thingy that you speak into that did that, I apologize.
Kk well I posted who it is. Sorry if the library computer doesn’t allow trackers and whatever keeps popping up. Anyway you can drop by the shop and we can talk shop.
Heard some pretty dark stuff up the hill… I hope the best.
Hi Lonny, I passed your tip on to Shanda before deleting the comment. You may be certain but without proof, it’s an allegation of a crime without an arrest/conviction which goes against the rules of the comment section.
This is heartbreaking. Feather Rose is owned by some very good and kind people who donate often to the community. So sorry Shanda♥️
For all you people on here saying”bum, another unemployed man, loser” all of that, you should take a step outside in garberville and take a look, everyone there are good people from homeless to rich in my opinionthe homelessare nicer people, maybe this individual has suffered tremendously, maybe came from an abusive, drug infused home were love was the size of a cocroach you don’t know because your so out of f@#$n touch,if you came from this situation and made it out and look down on him then most likely your now the abusive one,
The owners of this thrift store definitely did not deserve this for sure, it is hard for everyone, but maybe this person wanted to get theirs while all you judgemental f@#%s sat inside and stuffed your fat ass faces on Thanksgiving
