Feather Rose Burglarized on Thanksgiving

Feather Rose Thrift Store in Garberville was broken into on Thanksgiving night, leaving the store owner, Shanda Rial, flabbergasted and in a lurch.

As Rial balanced family obligations and preparing a Thanksgiving meal, an unidentified male used a cement block to shatter the glass on the front door to her business around 9:30 p.m. on November 24. The burglar made off with jewelry and clothing. This is the second time Feather Rose has been targeted by burglars within the last year.

Rial, with the support of the community, was recently able to purchase the building her business has resided in since 2015. The local business owner is known for her generosity with those that are in need. The thefts have left Rial disheartened – and mad.

“How dare people do this to people?” she questions.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified and officers, along with Rial, spent Thanksgiving evening searching for the suspect to no avail.

Today, Rial is hoping the community can help identify the burglar as she picks up the pieces from the latest theft. After the last break-in, the local houseless community were able to locate items stolen and return them to Rial, helping offset some of the damage done.

In the most recent theft, Rial says the door the burglar shattered was worth more than the items stolen, leaving the strapped business owner in a financial lurch. After using every bit of savings she had accumulated, in addition to community help, Rial was able to purchase the building, leaving her depleted. With insurance and property tax due, Rial was already struggling. Now she has the cost of repairing her door that is currently boarded over, making it impossible for customers to enter her business on the busiest shopping day of the year.

Rial is hopeful her husband will be able to figure out a temporary solution that will allow her to open her business today.

“I just can’t get a break,” she says, exasperated.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office – Garberville, at (707) 923-2761.

Another unemployed working age man out on the loose

Why are working age people refusing to work the majority of their waking hours in exchange for enough money to share an apartment with strangers and then die in a horrible situation? It’s like they are lazy or something.

So sorry this happened! It shouldn’t have.
So you own the business? And, you own the commercial real estate that the business sits on? Can we assume you own your home as well then? What model Tesla do you drive from your owned home to your owned business that sits on your owned piece of commercial real estate?
And you want us to pay for replacing the glass that a burglar broke on your door?
You sound very out of touch with the struggles of average community members. Maybe you aught to just take the loss of a window and be thankful for your good fortune. Happy Thanksgiving

Dear Thank You?,
Shanda built the business and supports local nonprofits including the shelter for battered women and children, homeless help, our local theater, and many others. She is the heart of generosity in our community. She does not own the location outright, she has to meet a hefty mortgage every month. She lives very humbly and does not drive or own a luxury vehicle. The person who is out of touch is you, with your nasty assumptions about a gem in our community. Yes, I’m one of the community members who supported her purchase of the building, and yes, I seriously wonder whether you lift a finger to benefit the community you claim to be an average member of.

No where did I ask for anything.

Nor do I drive a fancy car or take vacations.

Just reporting a crime.

I actually work 10 hour days and give back to my community daily.

Not sure why you are so bitter but your attitude is what is wrong with the world!

$5000.00 in stolen merch and a minimum of $1000.00 to fix my door…..

Yes I am dealing with it.

Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Not that it’s right what he did,its wrong !
but your comment is ridiculous, their are no jobs in this area, legalization wiped the industry dry. Alot of people can’t just pack up and move to the city or out of state to get a job.
But alotnof the problems in this area are caused by locals bringing in out of towers to work. Then they don’t pay their workers and they end up on the streets. These break ins are known as smash and grabs in the city and happen daily. People don’t get punished for actions, judges just release them. Crime is on the up and up. People steal to eat, I mean a loaf of bread is $6, peanut butter is $4 and a jar of jelly is $5. $15 bucks to make a few pb&js.

Actually, that’s quite a few PBJ’s…at least 10-15…so a buck, buck n a half a sandwich! Very doable.

People routinely do “just pack up and move to the city or out of state to get a job.” There are no indigenous humanoids in North America so every single person here- tribal or not- is the descendent of people who moved to get a better livelihood.

The culture of demanding adherence to some laws but admiring violating other laws is peculiarly endemic in southern Humboldt. Why is it “honest” to pay under the table wages to undocumented workers, not pay taxes or fair labor law required benefits and render vigilante justice in a proscribed business but just horrible to break a door down in a business to take stuff? Seemingly, doing what harms others is just fine if they don’t know them personally. Too bad it’s difficult to restrain behavior if it’s a personal choice to be law abiding. Someone sooner or later will have a looser standard of “acceptable” crime.

How much does it cost to drive from SoHum to Winco?

I don’t regularly buy bread, but I priced eggs at Ray’s in Gville last Friday. $5.99 a dozen for the plain old Everyday Essential store brand.

Those of you who live up north may not realize that you’re SoHum neighbors live in a food desert.

I’ve gone through 4 workers over tha last month down here in SoHum trying to harvest my last greenhouse. They can’t fucking show up on time or at all. It’s pathetic. It’s easy work too, sitting in a chair plucking fan leaves off plants that someone brings to you, $20 per hr.
If you are punctual and have good work ethic, there is more work around here than you can handle. That’s been my experience over the last decade. But more than half the workforce around here is on drugs or lazy.

I have one. Use it for b grade and bottom branches. On big nice buds, I don’t like how trichomes rub off on the grate, it cuts off the tips of sugar leaves, and it leaves crows feet. Removing fan leaves makes for better trim too, ours consistently tests above 15%. I also have limited drying space and can cram a lot more in there without the fan leaves on. If you’re careful cutting the plants, picking leaves, and hanging them, it makes for a better quality product. I never lay my buds down flat on their sides, on top of each other, cram them in a bin or get compressed at all.

‘Why Can’t They Take NO for an Answer’

Mar 13, 2015 | ‘Manipulation’

“Misconception #3: A conversation isn’t over until both parties agree it is. When someone isn’t being reasonable, looking for agreement – on the issue, or even on whether to continue the discussion – is pointless. You have the right to walk away. This is the time to use it.”

“When someone says, “I won’t take no for an answer,” you can simply let that person know that acceptance is not required. You can do that in a number of ways:

The Light-Hearted Response: Sorry … no returns or exchanges on this one!
The Confrontational Response: Take it or leave it; the answer’s still the same! (Not recommended, unless you’re consciously choosing to be aggressive!)
The Understanding Response: I understand that this is difficult for you, but this is important to me, too. I’m not going to change my mind.
The All-Purpose Response: I hear you, but my answer is still no.
The Non-Response: Ignore the objection and carry on without giving in.”

A cheaper way to do burglar bars is to use external metal fencing that you cut to fit with a grinder.

Seems strange that somebody would break into a thrift store to rob it, kind of a low-end target.

When we simplify the issues to “out of town brought in by others,” or people who are “too lazy to work” we accomplish absolutely nothing. For decades we’ve put band aids on the majority of society’s very real and impactful ills and now we’re experiencing the cause and effect of such neglect of community. Now this isn’t reflective of our community in particular- but we’re also no exception. With neglect to mental health, the ever growing and blatant issue of income equality and then you add the post covid psychosis when literally EVERY SINGLE HUMAN you encounter has a chip on their shoulder (like they were the ONLY ones experiencing hard times in covid, not everyone) and you’ve got a huge mess that will not be solved by a continuation of “lock them up” either. We’ve been doing over incarceration for decades and people STILL be committing crimes. If people feel like they’re required to dedicate every second of their life to work jobs they hate and have no long term benefit to them besides stress and living paycheck to paycheck (and STILL not enough) then why would we continue doing so?? What’s the payoff?? Little to none. We’re seeing society commit slow suicide in many non traditional ways and it’s not gonna be bandaids that solve this shit.

If we simplify the issues to exclude recreational drug use and condemn the “lock them up” solution as well, we still have a big mess. Most people are not “required to dedicate every second of their life to work jobs they hate” anyway. Hateful work unfortunately is what others are willing to pay for- doing stuff that is not enjoyable at a cost they can afford. If it’s too expensive, they bite the bullet and do it themselves. That is the unfortunate nature of an economy for unskilled labor. Always has been.
There never were many magical fun jobs in the world in the best of times and these are not the best of times. Strangely enough, people do tend to think that “things” were better times at some “Golden Age” in the past. “Golden Ages” are an illusion created by selecting facts. Ah… The good old days of the “Rat Race” and how to avoid it. There is always someone selling that idea. The selling of which is their idea of how to avoid it.

Landscaping, carpentry etc. etc. Even painting a house or putting on a new roof. All can be done with pride..Even ranch work will leave you with a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day.
Pulled green chain for awhile, even took pride in the work I did there.

Sorry to hear you got stuck in a job you hated, but there is so many satisfying jobs to be done and you leave with a good feeling at the end of the day..

This is to the jackass the remark about Santa driving a Tesla! Apparently you don’t know her from a bucket of paint. I will never forget when somebody stole my jacket and I was in a bad situation she gave me a line of credit and eventually I paid her for that jacket. Something that may be small to you is something that is huge to others such as being able to stay warm on a cold night. There ain’t no doubt when Santa’s having a bad day she can be a little rough around the edges but give Grace we’re Grace’s too she’s got a heart of gold. I don’t forget things like that so when she was going through it and she thought she was going to lose her business I made sure that I contributed something to helping her to the cause of saving her business. So before you open the big intelligent mouth of yours it’s so collegic, treat others as you would want to be treated, but you put out there and energy eventually will come back to you! Check yourself before you wreck yourself boy !!!!! Hold your head high Shanda we love you very much !!!!!!!!
