Loud explosion heard across Wyoming Valley on Thanksgiving Day

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — From Ashley, to Wilkes-Barre, to Pringle, to Hanover Township and Plymouth, residents reported hearing a large explosion on Thanksgiving morning.

The loud boom around 11:30 a.m. prompted responses from local fire departments to check the areas where the noise was heard.

The explosion was even heard by dispatchers at the Luzerne County 911 Center in Hanover Township.

In a doorbell video recording sent to Eyewitness News, the explosion could be heard from the camera’s location on Andover Street in Wilkes-Barre. The homeowner, Tara, said many neighbors emerged from their houses after the explosion to see what happened.

Social media commenters sounded off posting about hearing the noise and feeling it shake their homes. Speculation ran wild from earthquakes and meteors to exploding shooting targets known as tannerite.

Hanover Township police tell Eyewitness News there was no evidence of tannerite being used at the location they searched in the woods near the Preston section of the township. Police say they have closed the investigation. There have been no reports of damage or injuries.

Eyewitness News will update this story when more information is released. Watch tonight at 6:00 p.m. to hear from neighbors where the blast occurred.
