Recently, there have been many discussions about the words we use to address the “alumnae/i” of Vassar. We recognize the diversity of views on this issue, which has become more and more complex over time, and we’ve appreciated hearing from so many of you.

During its October meeting, Vassar’s Board of Trustees approved the College moving to the use of alum (singular) and alums (plural). The decision was made in consultation with the Alumnae/i Association of Vassar College (AAVC) Board, which agreed that using these terms was a good path forward. Although the word “alumni” in Latin can be used to refer to mixed-gender groups, the feedback suggested the term was not appropriately inclusive. Meanwhile, “alumnae/i” referred to women and men but was not befitting a culture that supports non-binary members of our community.

There will be some exceptions to the use of alum/alums.  We will continue to address members of pre-1970s classes with the term alumnae, and Alumnae House will retain its name.  Other proper names, such as the Alumnae/i Association of Vassar College, the African American Alumnae/i of Vassar College, and some employee titles, will retain the “ae/i,” pending further discussion. We will generally use alum/alums in written and spoken form.

To those of you who have contacted us, thanks for the helpful feedback as the College contemplated this decision.  While we realize there is no perfect solution, “alums” is inclusive and reflective of our community and values. Over time, we expect that many of our peer colleges will move to this approach (some have already done so).
