WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia State Police (VSP) Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Washington County.

Troopers say the incident happened at approximately 9:29 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in the area of Lee Highway and Route 11 at exit 32. State Troopers say they responded with Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies to a car crashed into a guardrail.

When authorities checked the vehicle they found only a woman and a dog inside with the driver missing. They began to search the area for the driver when a gunshot was heard from what they say was approximately 20 yards away. Troopers say deputies then returned fire.

The driver was identified as 39-year-old Travis W. Fields of Lebanon Va. VSP says Fields was located approximately 20 yards away, deceased. Fields’ remains were taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy. 

Troopers say the female passenger and dog were checked out for injuries on the scene and released. No law enforcement was injured during the shooting.

According to a press release the incident is still under investigation and a handgun was recovered from the scene.
