Columbia Police Tuesday arrested two men for allegedly cashing stolen checks.
According to court documents, officers were called to the Commerce Bank on Bernadette Drive where they were met by bank employees who said 34-year-old Roylee Moore was attempting to cash a stolen check. They had already contacted the person to whom the check belonged and determined that the check had been stolen.
When officers made contact with Moore in the drive-through, he told them the check came from a friend for payment. A passenger in the car was identified as 32-year-old Charles Hayes of Jefferson City.
A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed that both Moore and Hayes were carrying meth pipes. They also found 16 other checks that belonged to neither man. Most of the checks had been washed or had already had Moore's name added to them. A bank card belonging to someone else was also found. A call to the owner of that card revealed that he had ordered the card but it had not shown up in the mail yet.
During interrogation, Moore admitted he knew he was cashing stolen checks. He said he was cashing the checks for Hayes because Hayes did not have an ID. Both men were arrested on suspicion of Forgery.
