SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – In a race that came down to a few hundred votes, Sheng Thao has been declared as Oakland's next mayor.

The 37-year-old progressive edged out City Councilmember Loren Taylor by a razor thin 682 votes, the Alameda County Registrar of Voters announced on Monday.
Thao promised to tackle violent crime and create more jobs through a citywide safety plan. She also said she will make rising homelessness a priority.
Thao is one of the youngest mayors in Oakland history. In a statement Monday night, she expressed her excitement, saying she was humbled while praising her opponent Loren Taylor.
Prior to the release of the final numbers, Taylor said Oakland will always come first. "Oakland and its future are deeply personal to me. That's why we began this, that's why we continue and regardless of the outcome we will continue to drive that outcome, that impact that we know is needed to make Oakland even better of a place for everybody," he stated.
Thao replaces outgoing Mayor Libby Schaaf.
