The Talkeetna Fire Department and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) have 34 carbon monoxide detectors available for residents.
The CERT team led the effort to receive grants through the Community Assistance Program from the Susitna and Talkeetna Community Councils. Those grants helped fund the detectors, which cost about 60 dollars per unit. The detectors were purchased in bulk and are now ready for distribution through the Talkeetna Fire Department.
The Fire Department already gets smoke detectors for the community through the Red Cross, according to Chief Eric Chappell. These new units are specifically for carbon monoxide. “We have a lot of people around here who heat with alternative means,” says Chappell. “We do see a fair number of calls related to carbon monoxide poisoning.”
Bill Was, team lead for Talkeetna CERT indicates that the carbon monoxide detectors are available to anyone in the Talkeetna and Sunshine areas that does not already have a unit and wants one. If needed, the Fire Department will install the units for residents as well.
