Update- Nov. 23, 9:40 a.m.: Riverhead Police have released the identity of the woman found deceased in a wooded area of Wading River Sunday afternoon.

Police identified the woman as Joanna Derosse, 44, of Brentwood. The investigation into the woman’s death is ongoing, police said.

“At this time, we believe that the woman was not a victim of a crime and that no apparent criminality caused the woman’s death,” police said in a press release this morning.

Original story: Riverhead Police are seeking the public’s help to identify a woman who was found dead in a wooded area in Wading River yesterday.

Police said the woman was found on Sunday in a wooded area behind 20th Street in Wading River. They received a call at approximately 2:28 p.m. from a resident who found the body while walking his dog in the area, according to a police press release. Police currently believe the woman was not the victim of a crime and there is “no apparent criminality” that caused the woman’s death.

The woman is described by police as white, approximately 35 to 40 years old with dyed red hair, wearing a black jacket and camouflage pants. 

The Riverhead Police detectives and the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the matter. Anyone with additional information that could help identify the deceased is urged to call the Riverhead Town Police at 631-727-4500 x 312 or the Riverhead Police Department Crime Hotline at 631-727-3333.  All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
