San Diego Responds to Colorado Gay Night Club Shooting

SAN DIEGO - San Diego residents gathered to mourn the victims of a shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado.

San Diego residents held candles at the Pride Flag in Hillcrest Sunday night asking that all too familiar question: 'why would this happen, again?' Just steps away from the Pride flag, others gathered at the LGBT Center for Transgender Day of Remembrance, honoring the lives of 32 transgender and non-binary people who were murdered in San Diego this year.

“Today is a moment for us to reflect on the lives that we’ve lost to violence against the transgender community, and it is only too fitting and devastating that it comes in the wake of what happened in Colorado Springs last night,” Executive Director of San Diego Pride Fernando Lopez told NBC 7. “Every single thing that we do is to combat hate, and we are just going to continue doing that work.”

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Councilmember Stephen Whitburn were among those in attendance for the day of remembrance.

"We are going to do everything we can in our power to prevent the hate that we have seen too often against the transgender community and the broader LGBTQ community,” Whitburn said.

The San Diego Police Department and the Hillcrest Business Association are hosting a meeting together to discuss safety and security issues in the wake of this mass shooting. The meeting is scheduled for 6:00p.m. Monday at Rich's night club in Hillcrest.

The suspect in the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs may have ties to San Diego.
