VMI football ended their season Saturday after a disappointing loss to The Citadel. One day later, Keydets coach Scott Wachenheim ended his tenure in Lexington.
Wachenheim announced the move on Twitter Sunday evening, saying part, that it was time to "reassess the steps I need to take in my life to become the very best man I can be.". Wachenheim's three-year contract extension with VMI was due to expire December 15th.
Wachenheim's run with VMI had plenty of peaks and valleys over 8 seasons, finishing with a 24-62 record in Lexington, but taking the program back on the map in the spring 2021 season. VMI claimed the SoCon title - its first since 1977 - while claiming its first ever FCS Playoff bid. The fall 2021 season also saw the Keydets succeed, finishing with back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1961-62, helping Wachenheim earn FCS coach of the year honors.
Wachenheim also claimed the 2019 Southern Conference Coach of the Year award, as voted on by league coaches, the first VMI coach to achieve the honor since Cal McCombs in 2002. Wachenheim's has coached consistently since his playing career at Air Force ended after the 1983 season, including stints at Liberty ('06-'08), the Washington Redskins ('09), and Virginia ('10-'14), before taking the VMI job in 2015.
