BAY SHORE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A 22-year-old man pled guilty to attempted murder for shooting his ex-girlfriend in the chest during a "jealous rage" last year on Long Island, according to Suffolk County prosecutors.

On Nov. 30, 2021, Sammie Darby went to the victim's apartment complex located in Bay Shore, where he found her in the parking lot with another man, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said.

According to a release, a dispute ensued and Darby took out a 9mm handgun and then "fired a round into the victim’s chest."

Darby then "pulled the victim into his car, driven by a friend, and took the victim to the hospital where he left her at the check-in area to receive the necessary life-saving treatment for her injuries," the release noted.

He is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

“At a time where domestic and gun violence are so prevalent, this defendant’s plea sends a clear message that Suffolk County will tolerate neither," Tierney said.
