Percy Jackson and the Olympians has added two more to its star-studded cast.
Jay Duplass (Industry, Transparent) is set to play Hades, god of the Underworld, in the upcoming Disney+ series, our sister site Variety reports. Plus, Timothy Omundson (Psych) will take on the role of Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths and fire.
Hades is described as a god who feels like “an outcast from his family” and “a misunderstood genius” who holds a grudge for past wrongs. Meanwhile, Hephaestus “became disabled when he was thrown off Mount Olympus as a babe.” He still has legendary strength, and his “capacity for kindness and mercy sets him apart from his brothers and sisters in the dog-eat-dog world of the gods.”
In the 2010 film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Steve Coogan portrayed Hades and Conrad Coates played Hephaestus.
Adapted from Rick Riordan’s best-selling book series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians promises to tell the fantastical story of Percy Jackson (played by The Adam Project‘s Walker Scobell), a 12-year-old modern demigod who’s just coming to terms with his divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth (played by Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries), Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
The cast also includes Virginia Kull as Percy’s mom Sally Jackson; Glynn Turman as the centaur Chiron, who trains the heroes; Megan Mullally as Percy’s math teacher Mrs. Dodds, aka Fury Alecto, who was sent by Hades; Jason Mantzoukas as camp counselor Mr. D (the Greek god Dionysus); Timm Sharp as Percy’s stepfather Gabe Ugliano; Charlie Bushnell as Hermes’ son Luke and Dior Goodjohn as Ares’ daughter Clarisse.
Additionally, Lin-Manuel Miranda will play the messenger god Hermes, WWE Hall of Famer Adam Copeland (aka Edge) will recur as Ares, and The Flash alum Jessica Parker Kennedy will guest-star as Medusa.

TV Line, I know how much you love the Psych cast–Please get an interview with Timothy Omundson soon, so he can talk about this terrific role! So glad to see him in anything and everything. Credit, too, to the producers for hiring an actor who happens to be disabled, to play a disabled character. Omundson keeps being a shining example of resilience and positivity!
Lassiedolphilas! Excellent choice!
This thrills me to learn that Timothy Omundson has recovered enough from his stroke to work again. He never fails to entertain.
He’s a true rehab warrior. If you haven’t seen the “Psych” TV movies, do — you’ll see his recovery through them, and the one released a year ago shows such improvement (and very touching acting). If you’re a fan, catch the episode of medical drama “New Amsterdam” he did in Oct. 2021. Just hoping to see him in more and more roles.
I was debating renewing my Disney subscription but now definitely am. So happy for Timothy Omundson!
I’ve read the books, and if the show is loyal to the books, then Hephaestus doesn’t have much of a role early on…hopefully the show changes this.
In his blog announcing Tim Omundson’s casting, Rick Riordan said that we’d meet some gods, including Hephaestus, earlier in the TV series thanwe do in the books.
I’m surprised this is an article about Omundson playing a greek god and no mention of his role on Xena?
Or the fact that he played the first born Cain on Supernatural with God -like power.
Or that he played someone who thought he was God on Lucifer?
No longer close to one, but finally an actual God!
I’m so glad Omundson is playing Hephaestus, because that means we get to see the return of The King’s Beard!
Ah, that glorious beard! Omundson appeared at a “Supernatural” fan convention a few weeks before the Hephaestus casting was announced, and he cryptically stroked his full, now entirely silver-white beard, and said he’d been growing it out for a role he couldn’t reveal at that point. Then he quietly noted it was a “godlike” beard. Such a tease–we should have known!
