PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison after admitting he robbed a South Philly home, pulled a 17-year-old sleeping girl from her bed and pistol-whipped her.

Khairyi Burgess, 23, pleaded guilty in federal court earlier this year to robbery and conspiracy charges connected to an August 2018 incident, where he admitted to going inside the home and attacking the girl, robbing her family home of more than $1 million in cash — life savings from their nearby restaurant — and jewelry.

Burgess must pay back $1 million in restitution, and also faces five years of supervised release.

Burgess’ father Edward was also sentenced on obstruction of justice charges for erasing his son’s cell phone information related to the robbery.

Two other men, Demetrius Ceasar and Shaquan Johnson, also pleaded guilty and were respectively sentenced to 7 and 11 years in prison.

“The younger Burgess and his accomplices not only victimized a family by violating the sanctity of their home and stealing their life savings, the elder Burgess attempted to cover up the crime and help his son evade justice,” said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Romero.

“No one deserves what this family went through, and our hope is that some solace can be found in the finality of this sentencing,” said ATF acting Special Agent Eric DeGree.
