SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A coalition of United States Congress members led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi has returned from the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt.

One of those is North Bay Congressman Jared Huffman who serves on several House of Representatives climate panels.

Huffman represents several counties, including Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, and Del Norte counties.

"We're trying to show the world that the United States is walking the walk," he said. "We've passed the Inflation Reduction Act, and we're actually on track to reduce our emissions like we said we would in the Paris Agreement."

The Paris Agreement was enacted in 2015 by nearly 200 countries around the world as a way to combat the effects of climate change on a large-scale, cooperative effort.

"That's critically important so that our negotiators can ask the other countries of the world to step up with more specific commitments and get themselves on track," said Huffman.

The real challenge lies with developing nations that are having a hard time attracting financing to support clean energy.

Such countries include Pakistan, Bangladesh and a collection of island nations, according to Huffman.

These countries are "just getting hammered right now by the effects of climate change, this is not some distant thing," he said.

"And to them, if they're going to be asked to do all these things to help reduce emissions, somebody's going to have to start paying for the loss and damage that they’re already incurring," said Huffman.

"These are some of the poorest nations as well," he said.
