Running wild:Micah Coyle's breakaway runs lead Center Grove to 6A regional win

Turning Point: Micah Coyle's huge fourth quarter turned the tide of the entire game. On a night where the Trojans passing attack couldn't quite sync up, Coyle shouldered the offensive load. Center Grove led 28-25 with 10:15 left in the fourth quarter before Coyle broke free for a 62-yard run, putting Center Grove up for good.

Play of the Game: Coyle had fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 62 and 73. Both runs showcased Coyle's explosiveness and vision, but the first run proved to be the winning score. Coyle took a handoff up the middle, broke through the second level and went 62 yards to the end zone.

Player of the Game: Micah Coyle. Coyle rushed 30 times for 301 yards and three touchdowns.

Hamilton Southeastern 20, Westfield 0

Shutout:Top-ranked HSE plays 'inspired' football, and its D is basically perfect

Hamilton Southeastern became the first team since the 2021 opener to shutout Westfield, and in doing so, secured its first regional championship since 2005.

Here's what to know from HSE's 20-0 win.

Turning point: The Shamrocks' best (and ultimately only) scoring opportunity came late in the first quarter.

They were driving, reaching the Hamilton Southeastern 21 with a chance to score the game's first points.

But a 2nd down penalty backed Westfield up to the 33 and on the very next play, a wobbly pass towards the end zone was intercepted by sophomore Mason Alexander around the 10-yard line.

It's probably not a traditional turning point, but the consequence of that empty possession is not easily overstated.

Play of the game: There was nothing flashy about HSE's performance Friday night, nothing super glamorous or glitzy.

OK, except for this one play.

Following runs of 3 and 4 yards to start the second half, Jalen Alexander cracked off a massive 73-yard touchdown run.

The junior cut to his left at the line of scrimmage to hit the hole, dodged the reach of one would-be tackler to his right, slipped through the hands of another, then simply outran the rest.

It was a thing of beauty.

Players of the game: HSE defense. You could certainly make an argument for Jalen Alexander, who rushed for about 170 yards in the second half alone, but not enough can be said about the job the Royals defense did vs. Westfield, which never reached the red zone and may not have even crossed midfield following Mason Alexander's interception.

That's an "elite" defense, Westfield coach Jake Gilbert said.

Cathedral 14, Brownsburg 7

'A slobberknocker': It didn't go to script in Cathedral, Brownsburg heavyweight bout

When Class 6A powers Cathedral and Brownsburg met in Week 2 of the regular season, they rolled up a combined 77 points with Brownsburg winning by a touchdown.

Their battle in Friday’s sectional championship game was another anticipated offensive showdown, but instead turned into a defensive brawl, with Cathedral winning 14-7 to advance to its third straight semistate.

Player of the Game

Senior running back Carson Johnson made some key plays for Cathedral when it counted. His 2-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter turned out to be the game-winner. It came shortly after Johnson left the game briefly following a big hit he took on an incomplete pass. His best runs, however, came down the stretch, when the Irish burned more than 4 minutes off the clock, leaving Brownsburg little time to put together a game-tying drive. Johnson finished with 73 yards on 18 carries.

Turning Point

Cathedral’s Gabriel Bragg recovered a Brownsburg fumble early in the third quarter, setting up the Irish with good field position. Three plays later, quarterback Daniel O’Neil found receiver David Ayres for a 35-yard touchdown for the Irish’s first points.

Play of the Game

With the game scoreless and the first half clock winding down to 31 seconds, Brownsburg coach John Hart called his final timeout of the half with his team facing second-and-goal from the Cathedral 7-yard line. Following the snap, receiver Cayden Olinger took the handoff on a double reverse. Quarterback Jayden Whitaker leaked out of the backfield and Olinger found him wide open for an easy touchdown reception. The pass play gave Brownsburg a 7-0 lead at the half.

More: Whiteland wills itself to regional victory

Top play: Whiteland turned in several big plays during the night on both sides of the ball. Start with a 27-yard scoring pass from Kevin Denham to Gunner Hicks for the opening score, then a 56-yard scoring burst by Jonathan Crowley and the second-ranked Warriors had a lead they would never relinquished in winning their first regional title since 1999.

Turning point: The key stretch came after Plainfield (6-6) pulled within 21-14 in late in the third quarter.

After then ensuing kickoff, Denham completed passes on consecutive plays – the first to Malik Perkins for a 14-yard gain on what coach Darrin Fisher described as plays that are part of the team’s screen game. On the next play, Denham executed the same play to the opposite side, this time to Nyrius Moore-Smith for an 18-yard gain. The two plays took the Warriors from their own 24 to the Plainfield 44.

Four plays later, on the first snap of the fourth quarter, Moore-Smith burst off the left side and scored from 33-yards out. Three plays later, Moore-Smith intercepted a Plainfield pass and ran that in from 30-yards out and the game was effectively over.

Player of the game: Moore-Smith ran for 37 yards on just two carries, caught the key pass late in the third and his interception return was his second touchdown of the game – all within 64 seconds of playing time.

That stretch earned Moore-Smith accolades from his coach.

“Somebody different has stepped up for us all year,” Fisher said. “Tonight, it was Nyrius.”

Roncalli 20, New Palestine 7

'We're rolling': In battle of No. 1 vs. 2, Roncalli wins along the lines, wins 4A regional

Three takeaways from Class 4A No. 2 Roncalli’s 20-7 win over No. 1 New Palestine in Friday’s regional showdown.

Play of the game

There were two that were too similar to separate. New Palestine trailed 14-7 early in the fourth quarter, facing fourth-and-1 from the Roncalli 35. Kyler Kropp was hit at the line of scrimmage by Roncalli lineman Luke Swartz, who was quickly joined by several of his teammates. New Palestine got the ball back after a three-and-out and was again faced with a fourth-and-1 from their own 47 with 7:58 left. Again, Swartz made the stop on Kropp at the line of scrimmage.

Turning point

After Swartz’s second fourth-down stop, Roncalli put the game in the hands of its offensive line and standout running back Luke Hansen. An 11-play, 47-yard drive ended with Hansen punching it in for a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left for a 20-7 lead.

Standout performer

Hansen ran for 195 yards on 34 carries. The Roncalli line play – offense and defense – was the difference, but Hansen is such a great running back. Hard to believe he won’t be one of the finalists for Mr. Football. And credit the Royals’ defense, too. New Palestine finished with just 217 yards of total offense.

Bishop Chatard 42, Yorktown 14

Luke Purichia rushed for four touchdowns, and the Class 3A Bishop Chatard defense forced four turnovers to topple unranked Yorktown, 42-14, for the Regional 14 championship on Friday night.

The sixth-ranked Trojans led 21-0 early and scored in every quarter to collect their 22nd regional title since 1983 and fourth in five years.

Purichia rushed for 149 yards on 19 carries with touchdowns measuring 1, 10, 6 and 1 yards. Quarterback Drew VanVleet completed 12 of 17 pass attempts for 155 yards and a touchdown.

For subscribers:After beating Yorktown, Chatard is where it expects to be: One step closer to state title.

VanVleet’s longest completion traveled 41 yards for a touchdown to Colin Guy to give the Trojans (9-4) a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Bishop Chatard converted on its first three possessions with a pair of rushing touchdowns by Purichia. Guy finished with 5 catches for 66 yards, an interception on defense and a forced fumble.

Purichia also had an interception, as the Trojans’ defense stymied Yorktown (9-4) on downs twice and held the Tigers’ passing attack to 161 yards.

Jack Steadham recorded the Trojans’ third interception against Yorktown quarterback Mason Moulton, who completed 20 of 39 pass attempts.

More: Sheridan falls to North Decatur in regional

The Sheridan football team fell a win short of capturing its first regional title in 10 years on Friday night against North Decatur.

The Class A third-ranked Chargers (13-0) clung to a one-point lead most of the second half. But the North Decatur offense came through when it needed, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the final 6:08 for a 29-14 win.

No. 6 Sheridan finishes 11-2. It’s North Decatur’s first regional title in school history.

Tom Moor

Play of the game

After a North Decatur touchdown and two-point conversion put the Chargers up by 8 early in the second quarter, Sheridan responded quickly. On the Blackhawks’ first play of the ensuing possession, senior running back Jacob Jones sprinted for a 76-yard TD run to help pull Sheridan to within 15-14. Jones also recorded a 60-yard run in the first quarter.

Turning point

Clinging to a 15-14 lead, North Decatur finally put some distance between Sheridan when quarterback Carson Parmer found senior receiver Evan Howell for a 25-yard TD reception on a 4th-and-6. It helped push the Chargers’ lead to 22-14 with 6:08 remaining in the game.

Standout performer

Jones, usually the second option at running back behind 2,000-yard rusher Peyton Cross, shined on Friday night. He finished with 156 yards on 11 carries.
