ADRIAN — Incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg was reelected to the House of Representatives Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton

The Tipton Republican defeated Democrat Bart Goldberg of New Buffalo in the new 5th Congressional District.

"From Lake Michigan to Lake Erie, I am humbled to receive such an outpouring of support across the entirety of southern Michigan," Walberg said in a post on Twitter. "A special thank you to our many incredible volunteers and supporters who helped power our campaign to victory!"

Walberg received 62.5% of the vote with 99% of the estimated vote counted, according to a USA TODAY analysis of the election returns as of Wednesday afternoon.

"To the majority of voters in Michigan’s new 5th District who I have previously represented, I am grateful for your continued support," Walberg said in an emailed statement. "To the voters in the new portion of the district who voted for me the first time, it is an honor to be your voice in Congress."

Michigan's redistricting commission added the western counties in Michigan's southern tier of counties to places Walberg had previously represented in the U.S. House, including Lenawee, Monroe, Hillsdale and Jackson counties, while removing parts of Washtenaw and Ingham counties and putting them in other districts.

"We have all been feeling the impact of a Biden-Pelosi agenda resulting in higher inflation, a crime crisis, an energy crisis, and an open border," Walberg said. "Families in southern Michigan are ready to put the brakes on these harmful policies, and I look forward to fighting for solutions from the Commitment to America to get our country back on track. Working with my colleagues, we can build an economy that is strong, a nation that is safe, a future built on freedom, and an accountable government. Today is just the beginning, and we won’t back down. Because America’s future — our children's and grandchildren’s future — is worth fighting for."

Walberg will begin his eighth term in Congress in January.
