Longtime State Senator Jon Erpenbach had held the seat since 1998; he announced in late 2021 that he would not seek reelection in the 2022 midterms. The district covers most of western Dane County and parts of Iowa, Green, Sauk and Columbia counties.
Erpenbach was one of 14 Democrat senators who left Wisconsin for Illinois briefly in 2011 in an attempt to stall Act 10 legislation from passing. Erpenbach spoke with News 3 Now about his time in office on an episode of For the Record shortly after his announcement.
At the time of Erpenbach’s announcement, Hesselbein praised his commitment to the district and called him “one of the finest communicators I have ever met.”
