Mustang basketball hopes to return to winning ways

Marble Falls junior Jaime Castillo ripped the net with three straight long-range shots during a quick display of his shooting during Satur- day's picture day for the Mustangs basketball team.

Castillo was quick on his feet and displayed his athleticism as one of the key returners for the Mustangs.

Castillo is anxious to make the transition to the basketball court. He finished the football sea - son as the team's leading rusher.

"It's a different type of shape,'' he said. "I think we are ready to make the transition.'' Castillo, Bram Bow en and Kody Smith all planed on the varsity last season as sophomores.

‘It was a real rough year,'' coach Travis Crain. "Those guys had to learn varsity basketball as sophomores going against some really good compe- tition. "I'm really pulling for them to have some success this season.'' The Mustangs tip off the regular season Satur- day, Nov. 8 against Lock hart at Max Copeland Gy- masium in Marble Falls.

"I'm excited about this team having success,'' Crain said. "we've got a good group of athletes that had to play as soph- omores last year. I think Crain plans to carry 15 players early on the varsity and let players develop some winning habits.

Bowen and Smith are versatile athletes that can handle the ball and shoot well.

Castillo provides the team with athleticism.

(He (Castillo) has a motor,'' Crain said. The 5-9 Castillo ex pects the team to hit the

court running. He’s a deadly shooter and also has good overall skills.' Tidus Willie is one of five sophomores on the team.

He said he likes provide the team with momentum. The team has four seniors including post Gabe Davis, who is 6-3. Cooper Cochran is an other candidate in the post position.

"We play our best when we are aggres- sive,'' Crain said.

The Mustangs will compete in District 244A this season against Lampasas, Lago Vista, Georgetown Gateway Prep, Burnet and Jarrell.

The team’s Tournaments are the Marble Falls Subway Classic, the San Antonio ISD Tournament and the Wimberley Tournament.

District 24-4A action starts Jan. 13 with Lam pasas at Marble Falls.
