A man who was shot by police after trying to barricade himself in a north Austin restaurant on Sunday has been identified as 42-year-old Emeka Onyeabo Williams.
The Austin Police Department said someone called 911 at 9:26 p.m. and reported that a man wearing a ski mask pointed a gun at them.
By the time officers arrived, the suspect had left the scene and ended up at a restaurant in the 9200 block of North Lamar Boulevard.
Officers tried to tell Williams to leave the restaurant, but he did not listen to the verbal commands.
At 10:19 p.m., Williams began to fire shots from inside the restaurant patio. Officers entered the patio to prevent other patrons from being injured.
After reviewing video sources, APD said Williams fired the gun in the direction of an officer as they entered the patio space.
Five of the officers fired back and Williams was struck several times before falling to the ground.
Austin-Travis County EMS arrived on scene and took the suspect to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Williams has been charged with the offense of Attempted Capital Murder, a first-degree felony, as well as the offense of Deadly Conduct, a third-degree felony.
