Celtics' Joe Mazzulla says win over Sixers on Bill Russell tribute night a 'proud moment'

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Boston Celtics interim head coach Joe Mazzulla got his first win in that role in Game 1 of the Celtics’ 2022-23 campaign with a 126-117 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden on Tuesday, and let himself feel a little bit of satisfaction for the win.

“It was a proud moment,” said the Celtics coach in reference to the context of the night also being a special one to honor Boston Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell. “I was talking to them about the legacy that he left on and off the court, and the responsibility we carry, and to be able to hold that and build our own legacy.”

Noting that the team had picked up right where they’d left off at the end of last season, Mazzulla acknowledged the fan support that kept the arena electric all night.

“I pride myself in the Boston fans, and the city of Boston,” he added. “When they are cheering for you, it means you are doing something right.”
