Nestlé Recalls Cookie Dough for 'Potentially' Containing Plastic

Nestlé USA has recalled one of its refrigerated, ready-to-bake products—the Toll House Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with Fudge Filling—due to the "potential presence" of plastic.

In a press release, the company said the affected products were produced between June and September 2022 and were distributed in the continental United States and Puerto Rico. According to Nestlé, there have been no reports of illness or injury. However, the company chose to voluntarily recall the cookie dough after "a small number of consumers" called about the presence of "white plastic pieces" in the product.

A spokesperson for Nestlé told Newsweek that its lab identified the plastic material as PET (polyethylene terephthalate), "a material commonly used in food packaging."

The PET Resin Association (PETRA), the industry association representing North American producers of PET, said the material is "a clear, strong, and lightweight plastic that is widely used for packaging foods and beverages."

"Because of PET's unique properties, it is rapidly becoming the world's preferred packaging material for foods and beverages," PETRA said. "Like glass, it is a very strong and inert material that does not react with foods, is resistant to attack by micro-organisms, and will not biologically degrade. But unlike glass, PET is extremely lightweight, easy and efficient to transport, and shatterproof."

Nestlé said those in possession of the recalled cookie dough "should not prepare or consume the product." Instead, they should return it.

"The quality, safety and integrity of our products remain our number one priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to both our consumers and retail customers," the company said.

Nestlé hasn't recalled any other Toll House products at this time. However, a company spokesperson told Newsweek that the "issue" is still under investigation.

"We are still investigating the issue and are recalling the products we know to have potentially been impacted," they said.

More Product Recalls

In September, Family Dollar recalled 47 products due to improper storage. The products included pregnancy tests, condoms and Curad brand bandages.

Polaris, a Powersports manufacturer, issued a "stop ride/stop sale" in August for some of its snowmobiles due to the risk of fire.

Also in August, The Kraft Heinz Company announced a voluntary recall of a particular batch of Capri Sun juice pouch products. In a statement, the company said that over 5,700 cases of the Wild Cherry Flavored Juice Drink Blend product were contaminated with a diluted cleaning solution.
