Austin firefighters had their hands full all morning trying to knock down a huge fire at a gas station/convenience store on Oltorf in Southeast Austin at Douglas Drive.
It broke out around 4 a.m., just a few blocks from Travis High School.
The building sustained heavy damage and began to collapse, so fire crews had to pull back into defensive mode.
The blaze started as a trash fire outside, burned up the side of the building and got into the ceiling. Austin Energy had to come out and cut the power after the fire burned through power lines running to the store.
Emergency crews had to shut down Oltorf at Douglas Drive for several hours.
They say because the gas storage tanks are underground and the pumps are away from the building, there was no danger of an explosion.
