MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- In an effort to curb reckless driving in Milwaukee, the police department put a new tow policy into effect back in May.

So far, the department has towed more than 100 vehicles. The policy allows the vehicle to be towed when the driver is cited for an unregistered vehicle, but also when combined with other citations such as reckless driving, speeding or fleeing from police.

It al reinforces the message that the city is taking the issue seriously.

"So, we're sending a message, throughout the city, that if you drive recklessly in Milwaukee, you will face consequences. Your cars will be towed, they'll be brought here, and if they're not gotten and registered, they'll be destroyed, they'll be taken away," said Mayor Cavalier Johnson.

Police say 50% of the drivers did not own the vehicle that was towed.
