‘Blockbuster’ Trailer Welcomes You to Netflix’s Video Rental Sitcom

Remember Blockbuster Video? A long, long time ago, these stores used to be on every corner in every state. It was the place to go with your friends after school or with your family on a weekend morning – until the company went bankrupt in 2010 and faded into oblivion. This was probably, in part, due to Netflix’s popularity. And the streamer is continuing to get the last laugh as they just dropped the trailer for their upcoming workplace comedy, Blockbuster.

The 10-episode series follows Timmy Yoon (Randall Park) and his strenuous efforts to keep his hometown Blockbuster Video alive. The synopsis teases, “Timmy and his staff quickly come to realize that being home to the last Blockbuster might actually be exactly what their community needs to rekindle the human connections they lost to the digital age.”

The series looks like it’ll be filled with plenty of laughs that are catered to (and poking fun at) the film community. In the trailer, Timmy is motivated by an employee to “act like one of [his] favorite bosses from a movie,” to which he says, “Like Boss Baby or Devil’s Advocate?” Another employee jumps in, this one played by Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Melissa Fumero, and says, “One of those is a baby and the other is Satan.”

Along with sitcom favorites Park and Fumero, Blockbuster also stars Tyler Alvarez, Madeleine Arthur, Olga Merediz, JB Smoove, and Kamaia Fairburn, and is created by Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine writer Vanessa Ramos. The buzz for this new series comes at the same that Blockbuster Video attempts a comeback. For the first time in two years, the Blockbuster Twitter account tweeted “We’re back from the grave.”

The following month, it was announced that Blockbuster will be holding a video game championship at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. The announcement didn’t garner much attention, which the Blockbuster Twitter account noted by retweeting a tweet that read, “I almost for sure thought a publication like @Kotaku or @IGN would’ve done an article about the @Blockbuster World Video Game Championship…” Unlike Blockbuster’s lackluster announcement, Netflix’s new trailer has captured the attention of social media users and television lovers who are ready for a new workplace comedy from the hands of a reliable creator. It’s your move, Blockbuster.

Blockbuster premieres November 3, 2022 on Netflix.
