Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is expected to be sidelined out for around month after spraining his knee in the first half of the Blues' Champions League victory over AC Milan.

Fofana made a dream start to the match against the reigning Italian champions, getting his first Chelsea goal after 24 minutes. His joy was short-lived though as he had to be subbed off after picking up an injury just over 10 minutes later.

The Frenchman injured his knee in a challenge with Milan winger Rafael Leao. He initially tried to play on but ultimately couldn't do so. Things didn't look good after the match, with the 21-year-old seen leaving the stadium on crutches. But it now seems that the injury isn't as serious as many had feared.

According to L'Equipe, as well as multiple British source, said injury has been diagnosed as a sprained knee, and will rule him out for a maximum of four weeks, and maybe even less.

While it's therefore likely that he'll miss the remainder of Chelsea's match prior to the World Cup break next month, he still stands a chance of going to Qatar with the French national team.

However, with Fofana unable to impress Didier Deschamps at club level now, it seems unlikely that the manager will choose to call him up, especially given he hasn't been a part of previous squads.

What's more, he won't be match-fit by the start of the tournament, so it would no doubt be preferable for Chelsea to have him remain at the club to prepare for their post-Christmas matches
