Camp Notebook 06.10.22

Back to the drawing board.
Thursday's skate at the Scotiabank Saddledome was heavily focused on special teams, specifically the powerplay after an 0-for-6 showing against the Jets Wednesday night.

Here's how the power play units operated during today's practice:

PP UNIT 1:

PP UNIT 2:

Andrew Mangiapane - Mikael Backlund - Dillon Dube
Noah Hanifin - MacKenzie Weegar
"It's a big key in the game," Mikael Backlund said of special teams. "We need to be real solid in both sides of it, we missed on a lot of powerplay opportunities. They got better and better as the game got on but there's still some work to improve.
"There are new bodies to get adjusted to, that's only the second time the first unit was put together. For us, the guys working today on the second unit we haven't really tried it in game. Hopefully tomorrow if some of us are playing we'll get in reps and it'll be good."
On the flip side, the penalty-kill allowed three Jets goals on five opportunities. Last season the Flames PK ranked sixth during the regular season at 83.2%.
Now's the time to work out the kinks so they can hit the ground running when they kick off the regular season at home Oct. 13 vs. the Avalanche.

"We know our identity five-on-five and on the PK it's pretty much similar," Nikita Zadorov said. "You got to move quick, move side to side, we got to check, be super aggressive. That's the goal for us definitely. Winnipeg kicked our ass last night, we can't give up three power play goals so that's definitely something we need to clean up."
