Spencer, Ia (KICD) – The Iowa Lakes Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams competed against ICCAC foe Iowa Western Wednesday afternoon in Spencer.

The #11 ranked Laker Men were up first as they took on the NJCAA’s top ranked team in Division 1.

Right off of the opening kick, Iowa Western was able to score a goal within the first 17 seconds, putting the Reivers up 1-0. The majority of the game from that point on was very defensive. Iowa Lakes was able to get some good shots off, but unable to find the goal. A late Penalty kick in the second half with 11:20 left gave Iowa Western a 2-0 lead, and the Lakers were not able to close that gap. Goalie and Captain Taariq Ganga felt the team competed, but small mistakes beat them in the end.

Coach Ben MacRae feels the early goal really killed some momentum.

The last couple weeks have been tough on the Lakers, but Captain and Midfielder Lewis Duncan hopes they can build upon Wednesday’s performance.

The Laker men have lost 3 of their last 4. Coach Ben MacRae feels the team showed they could play with the best.

The Laker Women would match up with the NJCAA Division 1 #8 team in Iowa Western next. It was a very defensive dual through most of the first half where neither team was able to get many shots off, but a long Iowa Western goal found its way inside the top crossbar to give the Reivers a 1-0 lead going into the break. The second half was tough for Iowa Lakes, as Iowa Western was able to score 3 more goals in the matter of 15 minutes, giving the Reivers a 4-0 win.

Coach Sam Cain didn’t feel the team had been challenged like this yet this season.

Laker Adriel Schultzen likes where the team is at despite the loss.

This year is a big improvement on previous Laker Women’s Soccer Seasons.

Each team will match up with Iowa Central next on October 12th in Fort Dodge.
