According to a report, federal agents have collected the necessary evidence needed to bring charges against President Joe Biden's son, Hunter.

The report comes from The Washington Post, which spoke with a person familiar with the case. The source says that Hunter Biden could be charged with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase.

Now, the decision on whether or not to charge the president's son will be up to the U.S. Attorney in Delaware, according to the Post.

Federal investigators first started their investigation into Hunter Biden in 2018 and were initially focused on his finances concerning his overseas business ties and consulting work.

However, things changed as investigators narrowed the investigation to whether or not he reported all of his income and if he lied on gun purchase paperwork in 2018, the Post reported.

The decision is being left up to the Justice Department, as agents have reportedly assembled a criminal case against Hunter Biden. It is believed that the case is so strong it would bring a conviction if it went to trial, according to the source.

David C. Weiss, nominated by former President Donald Trump in 2017, is supervising the case, according to Attorney General Merrick Garland. Garland has also vowed not to have political or improper interference in the case.

According to the Post, Garland has not pushed Weiss to decide on whether or not to file charges, but it noted that it isn't uncommon for Justice Department investigations to take years to finish.

Weiss declined to comment via a spokeswoman that represents him. The Justice Department, FBI, and IRS also declined to comment.

Chris Clark, a lawyer for the younger Biden, accused investigators of leaking the information surrounding the case.

"It is a federal felony for a federal agent to leak information about a Grand Jury investigation such as this one," Clark said in a written statement to the Post. "Any agent you cite as a source in your article apparently has committed such a felony. We expect the Department of Justice will diligently investigate and prosecute such bad actors. As is proper and legally required, we believe the prosecutors in this case are diligently and thoroughly weighing not just evidence provided by agents, but also all the other witnesses in this case, including witnesses for the defense. That is the job of the prosecutors. They should not be pressured, rushed, or criticized for doing their job."
